The striking Mediterranean getaway known as the ‘Island of Beauty’ definitely lives up to its name, and there’s so much to see and do there.
A stunning island renowned for its rugged landscapes, towering mountains and breathtaking coastal scenery has earned the title of Europe’s ‘mini Caribbean’.
Corsica, often called the “Island of Beauty”, boasts a fascinating history that merges French and Italian cultures, and is celebrated as Napoleon Bonaparte’s birthplace. It’s also just over two hours from the UK by plane.
Holiday-makers on the TripAdvisor forum have compared it to much more far-flung destinations, with one visitor penning: “Beaches can only be compared to the Caribbean – white sand, turquoise water – excellent snorkelling – lots of water sports if you want them – and lots of deserted beaches if you don’t.”
Another remarked: “It has gorgeous yellow sandy beaches and endless trees backing onto the beaches. It is definitely the nearest place to a paradise island that I have been to in Europe.”
Corsica is the Mediterranean’s fourth largest island and showcases varied landscapes, from soaring peaks to stunning shores, reports the Express.
Its tallest summit, Monte Cinto, stretches to 2,706 metres (8,878 feet).
The destination is also famous for the GR20 walking route, amongst Europe’s most demanding trails.
This island draws countless tourists with its spectacular beauty, showcasing striking clifftops, pristine sandy coastlines, crystal-clear waters, and heritage settlements including Ajaccio (the capital) and Bonifacio.
Guests can enjoy activities such as hiking, yachting, and discovering timeless hamlets. One of Corsica’s most stunning and secluded beaches, nestled in the Desert des Agriates, is a haven for those seeking peace.
Only accessible by boat or 4×4, its pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters are a hit with anyone looking for a bit of peace and quiet.
For a taste of Corsican flavours, head to local markets like the one in Ajaccio. Here you’ll find Corsican delights such as brocciu cheese, figatellu sausage, Corsican honey, and chestnut-based goodies.
The island also boasts several top-notch wine regions. The Patrimonio region is particularly renowned for its wines, with many vineyards offering tours and tastings.
