People are begging this mum to reconsider her choice of baby name after telling her it’s ‘super cringey’ and will make her daughter sound ‘like a dairy cow’ – but she loves it
Sometimes asking for opinions on your baby name choice can backfire.
Everyone has different tastes when it comes to names, so asking for opinions on the moniker you’ve chosen for your little one can be dangerous. If you’ve picked out a name that’s a little bit out there, those who love traditional names will say you’re making a big mistake. On the other hand, if you go for a classic, some people might think you’re being boring.
Ultimately, what you decide to name your baby is up to you – and other people’s opinions shouldn’t matter. This is the lesson one mum is learning the hard way, as she asked for people to weigh in on the moniker she’s chosen for her daughter – and discovered “everyone hates it”.
The mum revealed in a post on Reddit she’s chosen to name her second child – who is due to arrive in a couple of weeks – Sunny Mae. She wanted to gauge people’s reactions online so she could be prepared for any “eye-rolling and snide comments” she might receive once the tot is born.
She explained she’d originally wanted to name her daughter Sonia and use Sunny as a nickname, but she couldn’t decide how to spell it. So, eventually, she and her husband settled on skipping the full name and just going with Sunny.
The mum reasoned: “Then we both admitted we didn’t actually like Sonia that much, we just loved Sunny and both planned to use her nickname exclusively. We went through several other longer versions of Sunny but didn’t like any as much. We figure that if she hates it or feels she needs a different name for her resume or Starbucks cup, she can go by her middle name or change it when she’s older.”
But commenters begged the mum to reconsider. Some believed the name was “cringey”, and others went so far as to say Sunny Mae sounds like a name you might give a “dairy cow”. But most agreed the name would only suit her daughter while she’s a child and not as an adult.
One person wrote: “Sorry I think Sunny Mae is super cringey. It sounds like a description of the weather this year. Sunny on its own just sounds childish to me. It’s cute when she’s three but she may hate it when she’s 25. I think it’s an adorable nickname but I wouldn’t give her no fallback name.”
Another added: “I do not like this at all. Sunny Mae sounds like a dairy cow. You’re naming an adult, not a forever toddler. It’s not fair to give your kid a knowingly bad name with the option to go by their middle. Just give them a good adult name in the first place!”
A third also stated: “I don’t think it’s fair to name your child Sunny. It’s a bit juvenile and cutesy. She might not like it as she grows up. She may turn out to be shy and introverted and could be embarrassed to tell people her name. Kids in school might laugh. It’s not really about how much your friends and family will hate your baby name choice. It’s the human being that has to have this name and how she might feel about it.”
