As we usher in May, it can only signify one thing – Eurovision season is upon us!

In the coming week, the Swiss city of Basel will be swarmed by thousands of Eurovision enthusiasts for this year’s Song Contest, following last year’s historic victory by non-binary artist Nemo in Malmö.

A fresh line-up of performers is set to grace the stage, representing their respective countries, all vying for the prestigious Eurovision trophy and the honour of hosting next year’s competition.

After Olly Alexander’s 18th place finish in 2024, the UK has now pinned its hopes on country pop girl band Remember Monday and their track, What The Hell Just Happened?

Here’s a rundown of everything you need to know about the trio ahead of the much-anticipated contest, reports the Express.

Beginnings

Remember Monday is made up of friends Lauren Byrne, Holly-Anne Hull and Charlotte Steele, who became acquainted while studying at The Sixth Form College Farnborough.

The band was formed in 2013 under the name Houston, before rebranding as Remember Monday in 2018 – a nod to their free lesson periods on that day, which they spent singing together.

Aside from their musical endeavours, the trio have also dabbled in musical theatre. Holly has had roles in The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables, while Lauren portrayed Miss Honey in Matilda, and Charlotte played Jane Banks in Mary Poppins.

The Voice UK

Remember Monday first gained recognition on The Voice UK in 2019, and wowed the judges with their rendition of Seal’s 1994 classic, Kiss from a Rose. All four judges were impressed enough to turn their chairs, and the group ultimately chose Jennifer Hudson as their mentor as she was the only female judge.

The trio triumphed over Kieron Smith during the Battle round but were unfortunately eliminated during the Knockout stages after performing an original song, Jailbreaker.

After their journey on The Voice, the band members quit their jobs in September 2023 to fully commit to their music careers.

In 2024, they reunited with their former mentor, Jennifer Hudson, on her US talk show, where they performed Alanis Morissette’s 1995 hit, Hand in My Pocket.

Eurovision 2025

Earlier this year, in February, Remember Monday was announced as the UK’s Eurovision entry for 2025, making them the first girl band to represent the UK in 26 years.

Their Eurovision track, What The Hell Just Happened?, is a narrative about the aftermath of a chaotic night, with strong influences from 80s pop and rock.

The song was co-written by the band along with songwriting duo Billen Ted (Tom Hollings and Sam Brennan), Julie “Kill J” Aagaard and Thomas Stengaard – who notably penned Denmark’s 2013 Eurovision winner, Only Teardrops.

Reacting to their selection for Eurovision, the group previously expressed: “What The Hell Just Happened is exactly how we’re feeling right now! It’s all very surreal. Our friendship goes so far back, and we definitely never imagined that we’d be doing anything like this.”

They added: “We’re going to bring loads of fun, energy and hopefully do something that you won’t have seen before on the Eurovision stage.

“We honestly can’t wait to experience this with all the other incredible artists from around the world, and hopefully make everyone back at home feel proud! This is really the music World Cup and we’ll do our best to bring it home!”

The Eurovision Grand Final will air on Saturday, May 17 at 8pm on BBC One
