Tom Phillips now works for a company fitting security systems to homes and businesses in the South East

A disgraced former Metropolitan Police officer locked up over racist messages says a video titled ‘The worst race?’ posted across social media is ‘a joke and a bit of free speech’. Ex-PC Thomas Phillips, of Kenley in Croydon, was jailed for 71 days in August 2023 after he called his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend a ‘n****r pr**k’ and a ‘m**grel sp**e’ in a series of foul-mouthed WhatsApp messages.

Phillips, 36, admitted five counts of sending offensive messages at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on July 27, 2023. Companies House records show Infinite Group Solutions Ltd was incorporated just a day earlier, on July 26, with Phillips named as a director. Phillips and a business partner have since resigned as directors.

But Phillips, now referring to himself as a ‘technical consultant’, still runs the company’s social media, where he regularly shares updates on security installations. The content on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok includes job site photos, a £900 prize giveaway, and attempts at humour. The igs.london TikTok account has nearly 40,000 likes, and some videos have tens of thousands of views.

In a video titled ‘The worst race?’ shared across the social pages, Phillips said: “Fine. I’m just gonna say it. I’m sure I will get a lot of flack for this. Doesn’t matter if it’s a half or a full. They ruin cities like London, in fact they ruin every city. They cause no-go areas in those cities. They are even involved in terrorist attacks, like in Boston… Marathons, marathons are the worst race.”

In a phone call, Phillips defended the video, telling MyLondon: “It’s a bit ridiculous. You can’t have a laugh and a joke and a bit of free speech these days.” Over email, Phillips also claimed hashtags on the video ‘promoted inclusivity’ and that inferring something else from the video ‘would be a reflection on your own personally held prejudiced views’.

Ex-PC’s ‘core beliefs of racial hatred’

At a sentencing hearing in 2023, MyLondon reported on WhatsApp messages where Phillips claimed a fellow PC, of Mauritian descent, was ‘genetically drawn’ to his ex-girlfriend because she was ‘ginger with a nice arse’. Phillips also wrote ‘Have your white little afro babies with big flat noses. Your dad will love that haha’ and ‘He’s Black. Why wouldn’t he be a thief, he’s manipulative enough’.

The man who was the subject of the slurs, a Black police officer of Mauritian and Irish descent, said hearing the N-word sent a ‘physical shock’ through his body and reminded him of the abuse his parents endured when he was growing up.

“I am sick and tired of the racists that plague my capital and even more disgusted by the ones who plague the Metropolitan Police,” said the police officer, adding: “This has left me well and truly scarred. The damage that these comments cause to the service is unrepairable and gives good officers a bad name. It also makes our work harder when out there on the frontline.”

A probation officer who interviewed Phillips ahead of the hearing concluded the former public servant harboured ‘core beliefs of racial hatred’. Judge Louisa Cieciora told Phillips: “Your racial comments targeted not only obvious racial slurs but targeted appearance and stereotypes of criminality, it went far beyond lashing out at a broken relationship.”

Infinite Group Solutions website says the company was ‘founded in 2023 through the merger of two successful companies, combining expertise in building services engineering, specialist policing, and crime prevention’. Phillips is not named on the website, but it appears he is referenced as ‘Tom’ in a customer review describing him as ‘prompt, courteous, and efficient’.

‘It promoted inclusivity’

In an emailed response to our questions Phillips said he does not ‘hold a lot of stock’ in the probation officer’s assessment of him as the session lasted 30-minutes. Phillips also said he was happy to reference his policing background on the company website, and claimed: “Many people I meet who hear the story find it ridiculous I was even taken to court.”

Explaining his ‘worst race joke video’, Phillips said: “The intent of the video was to share a comical segue as has been seen in a similar video when a chap did the same thing with various car races. If you observed the hashtags you would see that it promoted inclusivity. If you drew something else from it that would be a reflection on your own personally held prejudiced views. We welcome the publicity it’s always good to expand the social account.”

When MyLondon asked Phillips why we could not see the ‘inclusive hashtags’ on any of his videos, he sent an image of hashtags like ‘#pure blood -> #purenonsense’; ‘#blackthreat -> #blackstrength’; and ‘#immigrantflood -> #culturalflow’, claiming these had not been copied over from TikTok when he reposted on Facebook and Instagram.

In a second email, Phillips added: “I am a law-abiding member of the public, and husband, and a small business owner. I have paid for my past and moved on with my life — I am not defined by my history, but by my actions today. My journey is a testament to resilience and strength. Nearly two years ago, my world was dismantled, yet I have returned stronger and more successful than ever.”

Ahead of publication, Phillips shared another video on TikTok where he accused MyLondon of writing a ‘hit piece’ against him, adding: “I didn’t realise what a rag MyLondon is. I actually gave the reporter a bit of information. I felt quite sorry for him… I don’t really care, I’m an open book, I’ll take the flack for it. Whatever.”

‘Phillips has shown no remorse’

President of the National Black Police Association Andy George told MyLondon: “Thomas Phillips is not an isolated case. There are many others in policing who hide racist views, but those beliefs inevitably shape the way they treat minority communities.

“Robust vetting should have uncovered his extremist ideology, and the fact it did not raises serious concerns about how effective current systems are. His continued behaviour since leaving the service reflects what we see from anonymous and retired police accounts that regularly spew racism online, damaging trust and fuelling division.

“Phillips has shown no remorse for the harm he has caused, and his actions deepen the fracture between policing and the communities it serves. Until policing confronts these realities head on, racism will remain a stain on British policing.”
