Trying to lose weight but nothing’s working?

From bizarre juice cleanses, to hardcore intermittent fasting – the internet is overwhelmingly flooded with countless ‘tried and tested’ weight-loss remedies. And distinguishing facts from baseless myths is getting trickier by the day.

But now, two health experts claim that overcoming just one obstacle may be the key to shedding some pounds, if all else is failing – and it boils down to gut bacteria.

It’s no secret that ‘germs’ have quite a bad reputation – making us throw up, bedbound for days or even die in the worst of cases. Though, medics claim certain microorganisms make a surprisingly big difference when it comes to dieting and, bizarrely, they’ll actually make you feel better.

Dr Anis Khalaf, a specialist of traditional Chinese medicine, explained on TikTok (@acupuncturefit): “Are you struggling to lose weight? It might be because of your gut health! There are bacteria in your gut that digest food and absorb nutrients and when that bacteria is out of balance that will impact how fat is stored in your body and hunger levels.

“Bad bacteria damage the gut lining. This allows food molecules and microbes to leak into the blood resulting in inflammation… According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, the root cause of this may stem from stress, worry or overwork, along with eating the wrong diet.”

Dr Khalaf isn’t the only one to claim this either, with Helen Bell, a nutritionist at the UK Care Guide, also stressing that ‘good bacteria’ can ‘significantly impact weight loss’. She told The Mirror: “In my experience, clients with a balanced gut tend to have an easier time losing weight and maintaining it.

“Good gut bacteria are beneficial microorganisms that aid in digestion, support the immune system, and produce essential nutrients like vitamins B and K. On the other hand, bad gut bacteria can cause inflammation, digestive issues, and contribute to weight gain.”

To eliminate bad bacteria, Helen recommends steering clear of sugary snacks, fast food, processed meats and artificial sweeteners. Meanwhile, opting for fermented products and foods with a higher fibre content will help good bacteria thrive.

Yoghurt, kimchi and bananas are great for this, in addition to sauerkraut – fermented cabbage dubbed Germany’s ‘superfood’. Helen continued: “In my experience, a healthy balance between good and bad bacteria is crucial for good digestion and metabolism. Good bacteria help break down food, absorb nutrients, and regulate the body’s fat storage.

“When the balance is tipped in favour of bad bacteria, it can lead to ‘dysbiosis’, which is a microbial imbalance that may contribute to weight gain and difficulties in losing weight.

“The only other thing that I would recommend is staying hydrated, as water helps support the balance of good bacteria. Also, consider incorporating a daily probiotic supplement if your diet lacks sufficient sources of probiotic foods.”
