A family were mourning the loss of one of their cats – who was siblings with their second kitten. However, everything changed when new neighbours moved in next door
A family who adopted two sibling cats were devastated when one of their pets passed away – but then something incredible happened.
An orange cat moved in next door that formed an instant connection with the moggy that had been left behind. And in an amazing twist of fate, the household realised the two cats had met before. In fact, they were actually litter mates!
Sharing the heartwarming story on Reddit, the wife said: “My cat’s brother moved in next door a year after they left their mama.”
Adorably, they also attached a video of the two cats playing with one another on the grass.
The bond has helped the family to heal from losing their sibling cat around six months ago.
The Redditor added: “It’s been very hard on our kids and the kitty has missed his bro. So absolutely delighted when the new neighbours moved in and we made the connection that they had another boy from the litter.”
The cats have been spending so much time together that the family believes they’ll have to split pet custody with their neighbours.
They added: “They have been grooming each other, and little nose boops. It’s adorable, but yes one home is at risk of losing the company of their pet—more likely the neighbor I think.”
While the story may seem improbable, it was made possible because the family lives in a small town.
They got their kittens from a local farm that had a big litter, which is why some of the siblings didn’t move far.
It is possible the cats recognise one another even after being separated for months. If the littermates were very close and well-socialised before separation, they might show signs of familiarity or reduced aggression when reunited.
What’s more, Dial a Vet experts say that felines have both short-term and long-term memory. There are instances where they are able to connect factors such as scent and familiarity, even after months apart.
However, even if the litter mates don’t recognise one another their adorable relationship is clear.
Since the sweet clip was posted onto the viral platform, it has garnered more than 32,000 upvotes and plenty of positive comments.
One responder joked: “Now neither you or your neighbour are allowed to move house.”
Another gushed: “Typical brothers.” And a third added: “So so cute.”
