Fast-food fans have been wowed by a floating McDonald’s in Germany where you can order burgers, fries, and a McFlurry from a boat, kayak, or paddleboard – and the spot is one of a kind
A McDonald’s fan has been wowed by a unique eatery they found while floating on water.
Across the world, there are plenty of unique McDonald’s restaurants and drive-thrus but one in Hamburg, Germany, has been hailed as “the coolest in the world”. It is the only float-through McDonald’s in the world called “McBoat” which launched in 2015 and offers a unique ‘drive-thru’ experience for people on kayaks and boats. It is based on the banks of the Mittelkanal – a canal that feed into the Elde river.
The iconic Golden Arches lead out onto a jetty area where McDonald’s staff deliver food to hungry people floating on the water. Travel content creator and photographer Jordan Egbert, known as @counting.countries on Instagram is on a mission to travel to every country around the world. Recently on a visit to Germany, the adventurous man visited the unique McDonald’s while he was on a paddleboard.
Speaking about his experience, Jordan said: “This McDonald’s is a floating dock. I like finding unique McDonald’s all over the world and I think this one takes the cake as the coolest. Where unlike a traditional drive-thru, you can order food here directly from your boat.”
The service works like a traditional McDonald’s – you order food from the dock and staff members bring your order directly to your boat. Jordan explained that he found a company nearby the canal that he was able to rent a paddleboard from. He ordered a crispy onion barbecue burger and curly fries, plus a triple chocolate McFlurry, and enjoyed it on the dock.
“The food was delicious and tasted even better because I’m sitting on a dock in a river canal,” Jordan added.
British YouTuber Tom Scott, who has 6.44million subscribers, also shared his experience during his visit. In his YouTube video of the experience, he said: “When I heard that the world’s only float-through McDonald’s was on a little canal on the Elbe River in Germany, I thought that was probably worth a visit.”
He also interviewed restaurant manager Adrian Dudkiak, who said: “In the winter, we may close yes but in summer and in spring we are open 24/7. People are so happy to see this. We can see your order on the screen and we make your food ready. One person goes on, and brings the bag out and wish them a good ‘enjoy your meal’ and a ‘good day’.”
During the ’80s, the McBarge was unveiled in Vancouver, Canada, but it was moved to Canada’s Burrad Inlet after being anchored. Other unique McDonald’s include the ‘McMansion’ in Long Island New York. The property, once used as a funeral home before being turned into a restaurant, boasts shuttered windows and brick chimneys – and looks like a gingerbread house from a fairy-tale.
There are other impressive McDonald’s sites around the world – the biggest restaurant is in Orlando, Florida, and there is a McDonald’s in Rome with hand-carved statues at the entrance. In New Zealand, there is a McDonald’s where food is served from an abandoned aeroplane.
