The Beast is one of the brainy minds on ITV’s The Chase, but he doesn’t know everything. Here is the first question he wasn’t able to answer within the time limit – do you know it?

Answering this question correctly within five seconds technically makes you smarter than The Beast.

The Chase is one of the UK’s favourite quiz shows, as it allows us all to put our own intelligence up against the mighty brains of some of the smartest people in the country. On the ITV series, a team of four contestants must individually go up against one of several “Chasers”, with the aim being they must answer questions correctly before the Chaser has a chance to catch up to them and send them home.

And while the Chasers on the show are very smart, they don’t know everything. In fact, back in 2018 one of the Chasers known as The Beast – whose real name is Mark Labbett – failed to answer a question for the first time in the show’s history.

In an episode which aired in August 2018, The Beast was put on the clock after contestant Brian entered his answer first. But as he deliberated between the possible answers, the five-second timer ran out and The Beast was left without an answer – for the first time since the show began in 2009.

The question put before the Chaser would have been an easy one for some people, but would you have gotten it right if you were on the show and only had five seconds? The question was: “Charlie Jones and Joshua Pascoe have both played which EastEnders character?” The possible answers were A) Peter Beale, B) Ben Mitchell, or C) Martin Fowler.

For any EastEnders fan, this question is likely to be a walk in the park, and if you’d been on the show, you’d have waltzed through to the head-to-head after The Beast’s epic blunder. But for anyone who, like the Chaser, isn’t a fan of the BBC soap, it would be a complete stab in the dark – but at least you’d have a one-in-three chance of getting it right!

After the contestant locked in his answer, a five-second timer started to prompt The Beast to also answer the question, but he had no idea – and instead of guessing, he accidentally let time run out. “When the incident happened, host Bradley Walsh exclaimed: “The Chaser is out of time! That’s what we love.”

A baffled Beast then replied: “That’s never happened … ever,” and Bradley wasted no time in poking fun at the Chaser as he added: “There’s always a first time for everything. Don’t forget the little rule, when either player presses, you have five seconds in which to make an answer.”

Thankfully, contestant Brian was able to give the correct answer to the question – which was B) Ben Mitchell.
