Minifigure Speedway, a duelling roller coaster which will open to the public tomorrow at Legoland Windsor in Berkshire, is the latest and fastest ride to be unveiled at the theme park

Legoland has finally unveiled its newest and fastest ever ride ahead of its opening.

The ‘pit crew’ at the Windsor theme park are currently making the finishing touches to Minifigure Speedway, a duelling roller coaster which will open to the public tomorrow (April 6). Ahead of the official opening the crew were on hand to oil up the Team Legends and Team Allstars cars, before they took to the track for their final test rides.

The new £10m attraction has been inspired by Speedway circuits seen across the world and will see riders reach speeds of up to 56km/h as they make their way around the dynamic dual-track layout.

Racers will take their places alongside characters including Corn Cob Guy, Hot Dog Man and Bumblebee Girl in Team Legends and Team Allstars cars. Then they will put the pedal to the metal as they go head-to-head with the opposing team, racing forwards and in reverse to see who will be declared the winner.

Helen Bull, divisional director at Legoland Windsor, said: “It’s almost race day here at Legoland Windsor and the whole team is so excited to wave the checkered flag for the first riders. From coaster testing to polishing the wheels of the Team Legends and Team Allstars cars, the team have been busy getting everything ready as we prepare to welcome guests to the starting line. We can’t wait to see the new coaster in action as riders race to become Minifigure Speedway champions.”

The new ride is suitable for those measuring 1.05m and above. Tickets to the resort start from £35 per person, with kids under 90cm going free. You can also book short breaks at the theme park – find out more on legoland.co.uk/short-breaks.

In other theme park news, parents dreaming of finally taking their kids to Walt Disney World may be happy to know that the resort is bringing back its free dining offer that could save you thousands of pounds. The popular Free Dining & Drinks packages are available for holidaymakers who stay at one of the Disney resort hotels, and include free meals and drinks for each day of your stay, for each guest aged over three years old.

If you’ve had your fill of Legoland and Disney, or simply want to try something a little new, then PortAventura in Spain may be the theme park for you. It gets about one third of the visitors that Disneyland Paris does, but those who do make it down to the sun-drenched theme park almost always leave as big converts.

It is built around different theme hotels which transport guests into different worlds, all while offering four and five star luxury. If you fancy a far west theme, Hotel Gold River and Hotel Colorado Creek are your four star options. Caribbean and Mediterranean styled lodgings are also on offer. The themes continue in the park itself, where the map is broken down into different areas based on different parts of the world.

One visitor from County Durham recently enthused: “This is much better than Disneyland Paris, the rides were super fun with short bearable queues (15-30mins). This park is well laid out and features many rides suited for all types of thrillseeker.”
