Alexa Mullane, a nutritional therapist, claims that making better choices about what we eat is the secret to improving your sexual health and success in the bedroom
On the surface, you may think that soy sauce, yoghurt and oysters don’t have all that much in common. But one leading nutritionist claims these three foods are among five that could actually be the secret to boosting your libido and sexual health.
Alexa Mullane, a nutritional therapist and advisor for Wiley’s Finest, unveiled that countless ‘old wives’ tales’ that we may be tempted to brush off are actually true, with what we eat driving major changes to our sex lives – whether we realise it or not.
Speaking on soy first, Alexa explained that the bean derivative contains countless compounds called ‘phytoestrogens’. Research suggests these compounds actually mimic the role of oestrogen in our bodies and, when consumed, they can improve vaginal dryness.
This is primarily because vaginal dryness is a classic sign that your body is low on oestrogen or may even be entering menopause. So, the plant-based components can help to combat this deficiency, reducing vaginal discomfort during and outside of sex.
Omega-3 – the fatty acids found in fish, seafood and nuts – has a similar effect on vaginal dryness too, while Alexa also claims the probiotics in yoghurts can prevent UTIs down below. She told The Mirror: “The sexual health benefits of omega-3 are plentiful.
“Omega-3 can increase dopamine, the pleasure hormone, reduce anxiety around sexual function, improve pregnancy outcomes, reduce vaginal dryness, and may even help to prevent and treat ovarian cancer. [Meanwhile], probiotics are well known for their positive effects on gastrointestinal health, but they can also be beneficial for vaginal health. Lactobacillus is particularly beneficial because it attaches to the vaginal wall and prevents pathogens from taking hold.”
On the flip side, you may be surprised to know that oysters and beetroot are two key foods for bolstering your friskiness. Oysters in particular, are known for their high levels of zinc, which Alexa claims is linked to surges in arousal and even orgasm success in women.
Beetroot on the other hand, is not only a great libido booster, but is also eaten by countless athletes to improve performance and stamina. Alexa added: “Nitric oxide causes vasodilation, and in sexual health terms, this means increased blood flow – in a similar way that Viagra works – to the genitals meaning increased pleasure. Beetroot is also linked to the libido.
“It contains a compound called boron which has been found to beneficially impact the body’s use of sex hormones oestrogen and testosterone, thus increasing sex drive.”
