After five years of working on planes, a flight attendant believes she knows what your travel outfit says about who you are and warns a couple of popular choices are no goes for revolting reasons
You may want to rethink your favourite flight clothes if you don’t want to risk getting it soiled and picking up germs.
The well known adage ‘you should never judge a book by a cover’ doesn’t really apply when it comes to travel, if one flight attendant’s observations are anything to go by. She reckons she’s sussed out what category people fall into depending on what they choose to wear on a plane.
It probably didn’t enter your mind that anyone would judge you based on your tracksuit bottoms and sweatshirt or your little summer dress you popped on, thinking it would be nice and cool when the heat of your holiday destination hits you as you step off the plane. However, one woman, who has worked for an airline for five years, definitely is judging her passengers and has a couple of warnings about some popular choices of clothing.
Flight attendant Cher Killough, from Texas, shared her rundown of the items she and her colleagues see most often and what they believe they say about the wearer on TikTok, along with examples of women wearing them. The clip was captioned: “What I’m assuming about you based on the outfit that you’re wearing on the plane, coming from a five-year flight attendant”.
First she showed a model in a Lululemon Scuba top. Thanks to the hefty price tag on the sweatshirt – they retail from £84 to £108 – she thinks this traveller is either “a middle schooler” or engaged to someone with money. “Ladies, if you’re single, get you one of these, because I swear this girl always has a massive rock on her finger,” she quipped.
The sundress and sandal wearer is apparently, “always a mom that has organic snacks in her bag – you know her pantry is always stocked and she’s as crunchy as can be,” she commented.
Cher then turned her critique to the most risky outfit choices for flying. Jump suits may be comfortable but she says they are a terrible option because you have to strip off in the toilet and it may dangle on the floor: “If you’re wearing a lounge romper I’m assuming that you did not think this through because that top is going to be on the pee-soaked floor of the lavatory,” she warned.
Another area of the plane to be cautious of is your seat apparently, because that’s where parents often change their babies’ nappies. This makes exposing your legs a definite no no: “If you’re wearing denim shorts or bike shorts, I’m assuming that you do not realize how many diapers get changed on those seats and you probably wouldn’t care anyway,” she says.
Lovers of designer casual gear are easy to spot and she reckons it reveals exactly who you are: “Wide-leg sweatpants are always accompanied by the Louis Vuitton Neverfull or the Goyard bag, and you very much are that girl,” she states. While those who just want to be able to relax probably get the easiest time onboard and from Cher: “Cuff sweatpants, you just care about comfort, and that’s okay!” she assures.
Her clip went viral after she shared it, with others sharing their thoughts and travel clothing choices. “Pants and closed toe shoes ALWAYS,” said one. Another shared: “Yoga pants, a tank and a zip up hoodie for me LOL,” as a third agreed with Cher’s observation of one outfit: “Wide leg sweatpants and I have a Goyard,” she affirmed. Someone else couldn’t stress the significance of a plane outfit enough: “I always get fully dressed. That aisle is a damn runway,” they wrote.
