Rules limiting how much liquid passengers can take on planes from a London airport are to be reintroduced. The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced the change, which its says needs to be made to enable improvements to security systems.

The change only affects passengers travelling from Newcastle, Leeds and Bradford, London City, Aberdeen, Southend, and Teesside airports. These represent around 6 per cent of UK air passengers.

Other airports had made no change to the longstanding rules on carrying liquids. The DfT has emphasised that this is ‘a routine measure and not in response to a specific threat’.

People will only be able to take 100ml onto flights.

A DfT spokesperson said: “From 12.01am on Sunday June 9 2024, 100ml restrictions on liquids will temporarily be reintroduced for passengers travelling from six regional airports where Next Generation Security Checkpoints (NGSC) are in full operation. This temporary move is to enable further improvements to be made to the new checkpoint systems and will only affect a small number of passengers.

“For most passengers, security measures will remain unchanged. Passengers should continue to check security requirements with their departure airport before travelling.”

Current rules in full

City of London Airport lists the following security rules on its website:

  • Leave liquids, laptops, tablets and other electronic devices inside hand luggage

  • Liquids and gels only allowed in containers of up to 100ml in hand luggage

  • Only one cigarette lighter allowed per person

  • Declare camera film to the security officer before it enters the CT scanner

It adds: “Our security team check all hand baggage and clothing for dangerous or banned goods. To help with this process, please put any items you don’t need during the flight into your check-in luggage.

“Baggage rules vary per airline and ticket type, so please check your airline’s baggage guidelines before arriving at the airport.”
