Clips of an unusual sport dubbed ‘Discofoot’ – a combination of dance and football – have left fans of the latter confused, with some labelling it the ‘end of civilization’
Bizarre footage of a sport that combines football and dance has left fans of the beautiful game baffled.
Clearly popular judging by the crowd in attendance, a short clip shows a team in red face off against their blue counterparts – with every player on the pitch dancing non-stop. Even prior to a free kick, the attacker lines up while shaking his hips as he tries to overcome the wall of defenders – who also can’t keep still.
Substitutes and coaches on the sidelines aren’t exempt from the action as well, showcasing their own moves to the beat. The short video concludes with a goal from the blues, prompting a celebratory dance amongst the team – while the disappointed reds crawl across the floor.
“I’m super confused,” declared one X (formerly Twitter) after watching the action unfold. A second person asked: “How did one video manage to ruin the sport I’ve loved since I was five?” Another said: “The end of civilization.”
A similar video was shared to TikTok, where it was revealed the sport is called Discofoot. The narrator explains: “As soon as the referee blows the whistle, both teams perform plies, pirouettes and electric slides while trying to go about the business of scoring against the opposing side.”
Comments on TikTok were kinder than those on X, as one enthused user declared: “Incredible footwork. I’d love to see the penalty shots.” A second hailed: “I absolutely love this.”
And it turns out Discofoot actually has proper rules. According to La Voyage a Nantes, the one “golden rule” is “no running”. The site explains: “The only way to play is… to dance! Each team is assessed by a panel of judges, who award points the same way one would in a figure-skating competition. The aim is not only to score goals, but also to be as creative as possible!”
