The contents of a suspicious bag found on South London heathland ‘could be animal-related’, police have said. A crime scene cordon and yellow tent were spotted under a tree by Blackheath Hill at around 10am on Sunday (June 22), but fears that the remains are human have been partially dispelled by a Met Police statement.
A Scotland Yard spokesperson told MyLondon: “Police were called at 10:11hrs on Sunday, June 22 to Blackheath Hill, Greenwich to reports of a suspicious bag. Officers attended and a crime scene was put in place. The cordon has now been removed and enquiries continue.
“The contents of the bag have not been formally identified at this stage and further examination is ongoing. At this stage, it is understood that they could be animal related.”
Responding to a photo of the crime scene on X, one user joked: “I heard it was sheep’s guts. Which, if anything, is less expected.”
