A poll of 2,000 adults found 22% of these want to learn but feel it’s too late.
A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 22 % of them want to learn new skills but feel it’s too late. This comes after previous data showed that five years ago, only one in eight people couldn’t ride a bike – a figure that has now risen to 24%.
Additionally, 46% admitted they can’t rollerblade, and 28% don’t know how to swim. The study found that 37% are afraid to try a new sport as more than half (52%) believe they lack the necessary skill, and 42% fear embarrassment.
The research was commissioned by HONOR UK to promote its new phone, the Magic 6 Pro, which features an AI motion sensing capture feature in its camera. Bond Zhang, CEO of the global technology brand, said: “People shouldn’t be scared to try a new skill even if it is riding a bike or engaging in any sport. It can feel scary and embarrassing to try a new sport, but capturing those moments can really help you improve. But one day you’ll look back and see how far you’ve come and be glad to have those memories.”
The study also discovered that skateboarding (50%), ice skating (43%) and football (30%) were among the other sports people don’t know how to do. However, surfing (17%), Taekwondo (11%) and gymnastics (9%) were the sports they wish they’d taken up.
Of those who can’t ride a bike, 16% confessed that fear of falling off was a key reason for not learning, while 14% admitted they’re too embarrassed to learn as an adult.
A whopping 81% believe it’s crucial to keep learning new things as you age, but over half (52%) confessed they’d feel silly trying to pick up a new skill now. However, a significant 78% are inspired when they see older people mastering new skills.
More than half (58%) confessed to feeling younger than their actual age, while 19% feel more active now than they anticipated they would be two decades ago.
But a third (33%) lack the motivation to learn a new skill or sport and 30% simply don’t have the time. An additional 27% revealed that being unable to participate in certain sports or activities is a barrier in their lives. Meanwhile, 22% of participants in the OnePoll.com study feel societal pressure to excel in these areas.
Bond Zhang, representing the HONOR Magic6 Pro, which automatically captures 12 different sporting motions using AI, commented: “Learning new things can be scary sometimes, but it’s important to understand why people might feel that way.”
“This study helps us understand why some individuals might be reluctant to try new sports or activities. We should all work together to create a supportive atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable trying new things and confident in capturing their successes without worrying about what others might think.”
