To cover for these closures, the charity has announced plans to open 12 new ‘superstores’ around the UK by 2028, which are usually in retail parks
Cancer Research UK has announced it is closing 88 stores by May 2026, the first stage of a plan to cut nearly half of its 600 High Street outlets. There will be six London branches closing, which are spread across South, East, West and North London. The charity said it was cutting its retail footprint in response to rising national insurance contributions, inflationary pressures, and changes in consumer behaviour. A total of 88 shops have been earmarked for closure by May 2026, and a further 100 are planned to close by April 2027.

These changes will affect approximately 600 staff members and up to 3,000 volunteers who contribute to the charity’s mission. Cancer Research UK said it was committed to supporting affected staff by helping them find new job opportunities or volunteer positions if redeployment is not possible. In addition to these High Street closures, the charity will halt its online marketplace at the beginning of 2026. However, the charity has announced plans to open twelve new ‘superstores’ around the UK by 2028, which are typically four times bigger than High Street stores and are usually in retail parks. Currently, there are about 46 superstores run by Cancer Research UK.
Chief Executive Michelle Mitchell said: “Without action, many of our shops would struggle to remain viable. By focusing on a smaller, more efficient retail operation, we can enhance our funding for life-saving cancer research and better serve our customers, staff, and volunteers.
“We understand that this news may be difficult, and we have made these decisions with careful consideration. Our commitment to supporting everyone affected during this transition remains a top priority, and we will provide clear information and assistance throughout the process.”
