Neil from commercial cleaning service Bust The Dust has hailed the incredible results yielded by bicarbonate of soda. “Not only is it great for baking, but it’s also a fantastic deodoriser and stain remover,” he explained. “When used correctly, it can lift even the most stubborn of stains right out of your carpet fibres.” The cleaning ace urges Brits to sprinkles a ‘generous’ amount of bicarbonate of soda directly onto the stained area. Then, lightly spritz the powder with white vinegar until you see it ‘fizz and bubble’. “That’s the reaction that helps break down the stain,” Neil added.

After letting the mixture sit for at least 15 minutes, blot the area with a clean cloth or sponge and be ‘amazed by the results. The cleaner advises testing the solution on a ‘small, inconspicuous areas of the carpet first’ – especially if you have a delicate or antique rug that needs a gentle clean. If your cupboards are looking a little bare, you can pick up bicarbonate of soda online or at your nearest supermarket. Sainsbury’s is currently selling a 180g tub for just 59p. White vinegar won’t break the bank either, costing only 35p for a 568ml bottle.
