If you’re having a big party, it can feel as though the cake you’ve ordered isn’t going to go far enough to serve your guests – but a baking expert has a trick to avoid that
If you’re throwing a big bash, the worry that your celebration cake won’t stretch to feed all your guests can be a real party pooper.
But thankfully, one cake connoisseur has revealed the ultimate hack for slicing a cake into more than 30 pieces – because apparently, we’ve been doing it all wrong.
The temptation to quarter the cake and nab a hefty chunk might be strong, but it could leave your guests feeling short-changed. Cake guru @cupcakejemma took to Instagram to demonstrate the correct way to carve up a cake to make it go further.
Her video was captioned: “Wanna know the best way to cut a cake for MAXIMUM slices? We’ve got you! Will you be trying this next time you’ve got a cake to cut? Let me know in the comments!”
Jemma said that since becoming a mum, she finds herself “at kids’ parties at least once a week” and is “always” asked to do the honours with the knife – so she decided to share her technique.
She started by dividing the cake into eight segments, then slicing it into a snowflake shape. She did this by making an incision from the centre of the eighths to half way down the side. This produces two small triangular slices and a diamond-shaped piece. The diamond can then be cut in half, producing two more triangular slices.
Jemma explained: “It’s a really simple way to make a small cake go really far.” She managed to extract a “whopping” 32 portions from her seven-inch cake, and assured viewers that the same method would work just as well with a six-inch cake.
She added: “If the pieces are for kids you could even cut them in half again to make the cake go even further.”
One impressed mum commented: “This is genius! Especially for kids portions as she’s talking about in the video!” Another was taken aback: “I really thought at the beginning you were just going to slice this into 8 regular slices and it ended up being the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.”
