A man has shared hilarious footage of his 84-year grandad taking it upon himself to prune his trees in a cherry picker after refusing to pay for a costly tree surgeon

An 84-year old man was the toast of Reddit after he decided to carry out tree surgery all by himself.

In a clip shared by his grandson in the DIYUK subreddit, the elderly gent is seen getting to grips with a cherry picker at the front of his property. And clearly knows what he’s doing – as the clip concludes with a number of high branches falling to the floor.

“My stubborn 84-year old grandad not wanting to pay ‘tree surgeon’ prices,” the grandson captioned his post. He added: “He is a 3rd generation farmer so he’s always been hands on. He also can’t keep still which is why I think he enjoyed doing it.”

“What a superb bloke,” an impressed fellow Redditor said. “Make sure to buy him a pint, and cherish every day you can spend with him.” The grandson responded: “Thank you. I spend a lot of time with him as I live next door to him. My 5 and 8-year old also follow him around helping and watching him. He loves it having his great grand children asking him numerous questions and riding around on diggers and forklifts with him.”

A second person praised: “Let’s face it, when we have our pensions to hire the kit, our last bit of health and time on our hands in retirement, we’ll all be like that. Still going at 84 is a commendable effort.”

And a third hailed his performance, penning: “Fair play to him! Others can learn a lot from people like your grandfather! My grandfather was a farmer too, but became a chemist and then head teacher – it must be a generational thing, because that age of people can seemingly do anything!”

However, not everyone was impressed as one Reddit user warned: “If he gets away with it and finishes the job without damaging anything, anyone, or himself, he’s either experienced or lucky. Tree surgery is potentially incredibly dangerous, and difficult, for multiple reasons and factors, which is why like high voltage electrics you should always get a pro in.”
