A woman has been jailed after stealing more than £70,000 from her own grandfather.

The ‘frail’ pensioner experienced the ultimate ‘betrayal’ as Madeline Shaw, 32, was jailed for stealing £71,000 from him.

Shaw had power of attorney over her grandad’s finances and property, granting her full control over his assets.

Instead of taking care of him, the the scammer transferred buckets of money from his bank account to her own, which she not could prove was for her grandparent’s benefit.

In total Shaw transferred over £125,000 into her bank.

At York Crown Court on Monday (November 3), the Borrowby resident pleaded guilty to fraud by abuse of position in relation to £71,600.

She was jailed for 18 months and a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing will be held at a later date.

The despicable crime was revealed in 2021 following her grandfather’s death when solicitors acting for his beneficiaries noticed money missing from his bank accounts.

Financial investigators did some digging and discovered that shortly after being given power of attorney, Shaw moved £99,590 from her grandfather’s bank account to her own.

Then a further £20,000 was moved to another bank account, which was then transferred back to Shaw’s own account.

Further cash withdrawals totalling £4,490 were found along with a number of smaller payments made to Next Directory and Fabletics.

The criminal granddaughter insisted they were for days out for her grandfather, and the refurbishment of his home, but no evidence could prove this.

Shaw also claimed that she asked local traders on Facebook to carry out works at his home, but failed to provide names, documentation or any evidence of the refurbishments.

After her grandad moved into a care home Shaw failed to provide basic personal toiletries requested by carers.

The heartless criminal also failed to pay for care home fees despite having the means.

Investigating officer, PC Emma Harris of North Yorkshire Police’s economic crime unit, said: “Madeline Shaw betrayed the trust placed in her to act in her frail grandfather’s interests and ensure his money was used for his benefit.

“She has lied about what she did with his money but thankfully, when faced with the evidence has pleaded guilty and is now facing the consequences.”
