Police want to speak to the hero who chased the fiend away

A sex predator who tried to rape a woman after hiding near a bush was chased off by a random man in a North London park. Police in Islington are hunting down the rapist after a woman narrowly avoided his grip in Islington, just before 7pm on Tuesday (October 14). Scotland Yard are also hoping the man who chased him away will step forward to assist the Met’s investigation.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 18:55hrs on Tuesday, 14 October to reports of an attempted rape in Gillespie Park, Islington. A woman was walking through the park when she was approached by an unknown man, hovering near some bushes, who then attempted to rape her.

“The woman fled the scene and reported a separate unknown man chased the attacker. Officers believe this man may be a potential witness and want to speak to him as part of their investigation. This happened at approximately 18:50hrs and the suspect is described as Black, around 5″8 and wore dark clothing. The victim is currently being supported by specialist officers.”

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Ridley, from the Central North Public Protection Team, said: “This was an attack targeting a lone female in an open park space. We’d like to reassure the public that we are working at pace to try and find this suspect.

“We’d really like to speak to the man who chased after the suspect, as he may have some crucial details to help us identify him.

“The location is used to access nearby Finsbury Park and Arsenal Underground Station and therefore frequented by commuters who may have seen or heard the attack or who may have also noticed the suspect in the area prior to the incident.

“Or if you have noticed any concerning behaviour in the area recently please let us know. Even the smallest bit of information could make a real difference in our investigation.”

A crime scene is currently in place in the park as enquiries continue. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, or online, quoting 6576/14OCT. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
