Three men put their lives on the line when they stepped in to save a knifeman from a savage beating, moments after a blade was ripped from his hand by a gang of youths in East London. A shocking 87-second video, taken from behind the wheel of a car, shows what the person filming describes as ‘a madness’ unfolding on Glengall Grove, on the Isle of Dogs, at around 7:30pm on Friday (May 23).
As he drives down from East Ferry Road, the cameraman points out ‘a bruddah with a knife’ while a woman in the car calls 999, reporting ‘loads of teenagers running around with loads of kitchen knives’. At one point, a young male can be seen grabbing a mountain bike from outside The George pub, lifting it above his head as if he is about to launch it.
As a moped rider slows down to take a look, and a man with a briefcase walks after the group, the woman tells the call handler there are about 20 boys with ‘bikes, balaclavas, and kitchen knives’. Adult males then emerging from the pub, presumably responding to the aggressive shouting. The chases then continues down the road.
Around one-minute into the video, seen by MyLondon, a young male in a blue face mask and Nike tracksuit, holding a 10-inch knife in his right hand and a black rucksack in his left, turns to square up to another young male, while a third male sweeps around and kicks him from the side. The knifeman is brought to the floor, and the group descend on him, with one male stamping on his head.
With the males raining down blows, the woman says ‘Oh my God, they are going to stab him’, but the driver interjects saying ‘No, he’s the one with the knife’. Despite the grave danger, three older men put themselves between the youths, trying to break up the fight with shouts of ‘that’s enough’. Meanwhile, one of the young males appears to disarm the knifeman, holding the weapon in the air.
Police have since confirmed that officers attended and found a knife, but were unable to locate any victims or suspects. The force is calling on any witnesses to provide information as they continued to make enquiries.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 7.34pm on Friday, May 23 to reports of a group of males fighting in Glengall Grove. Officers attended but no victims or suspects were located. A knife was recovered from the scene. No arrests have been made. Enquiries continue.
