The freehold of a historic pub known as the second oldest in Richmond has been put up for sale for £1 million. The sale of The Watermans, in Richmond town centre, will not affect the business operating the pub as the current tenant will continue to run it.

The pub on Water Lane is being marketed by licensed property specialists Sidney Phillips, with the listing on Rightmove asking for offers above £1million. The listing says the venue has been ‘comprehensively refurbished and maintained to a high standard’ by the current tenant.

Heritage documents previously submitted to Richmond Council said the pub’s name first appeared in property records in the 1830s and that it is thought to be the ‘second oldest in Richmond, possibly dating back to the 17th century’. It was rebuilt by former owners Young’s Brewery in 1898 and underwent a major revamp in 2019.

The pub has a bar and restaurant with outdoor dining and a private room upstairs. The Rightmove listing says the venue is conveniently-located next to popular bars, restaurants and shops, while only being a nine-minute walk from Richmond train and Underground stations. The listing reads: “Watermans is located in the heart of the affluent and highly desirable town of Richmond-Upon-Thames.

“Water Lane on which the property is situated is an ancient cobbled street that leads down to the waterfront, a busy thoroughfare between the prime retail centre and River Thames. It is located close to a number of other high-profile bars, restaurants and retailers with occupiers nearby including the Ivy Café, Scott’s, the Curzon Cinema, Wagamama, Cos and LK Bennett.”
