Expert says it is better to take your own as it is something often overlooked when it comes to cleaning hotel rooms

A trichologist has warned people staying in hotels to pack their own hairdryer with the common hotel item overlooked when it comes to cleaning.

Trichologist Jacqui McIntosh – a specialist who focuses the study of diseases or problems related to the hair and scalp as well as their treatments – warned there is bacteria lurking in them that you probably don’t know about. It comes as a study revealed that hotel room hair dryers are often overlooked by cleaners, making them a breeding ground for bacteria and germs.

The Bellissima hair ambassador and specialist in hair texture management and certified Trichologist shared the risks involved with using a grimy hotel hairdryer. She explained: “Using a hairdryer riddled with bacteria and germs does pose health risks and can be detrimental to your hair health.”

Talking about some of the issues, she says that there is a risk of bacterial and fungal contamination. She says: “They become breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi.

“When these pesky microorganisms find their way onto your hair and scalp, they can spark infections and irritations, disrupting your hair follicles and slowing down healthy growth.”

As well as this, dust, mould, and other hidden offenders found in overlooked hairdryers are not just unhygienic, they are “troublemakers for your scalp.” Some people may notice scalp irritation, dandruff, dullness, frizz, and even hair loss as a result.

Hair breakage can also occur. When vents are blocked, heat distribution becomes erratic, causing excessive heat to certain areas of the hair, which leads to dryness, brittleness, and split ends.

If you have too much heat, you also increase your risk of burning your scalp. The expert explains: “Neglected hair dryers are time bombs waiting to go off. Debris buildup inside the device spells overheating, increasing the risk of singeing your hair or scalp.”
