The infamous property, which was used as Kevin McCallister’s home in Home Alone and its sequel, has gone on sale for the first time in 12 years – but fans have made a disappointing realisation
Fans of the hit Christmas film Home Alone have made a devastating realisation after seeing the infamous house where it was filmed go up for sale.
The property, which is being flogged for $5.25million (£4.2million), will be recognisable as the home where Kevin McCallister (played by Macaulay Culkin) was abandoned by his family during the hit flick and its sequel, Lost in New York. But the property was only used as the exterior for filming – a fact fans are only just learning.
The realisation came after viewers spotted the home’s modern interior, prompting one to ask: “What the hell did they do to it?”. It was only then other fans pointed out it was only the front of the home that featured in the film, while young Kevin’s daring antics and booby traps were set up in a film studio.
“Look how they massacred my boy,” another wrote. Some users were quick to realise the interior of the home was never used in the film. “It was a set,” one wrote. “The entire interior of the house was a set.”
But that explanation was not enough for some users. One person wrote: “They really took all the character out of it. Can’t even tell it’s the same house without a side by side.” Another fumed: “Gotta spend another million just to make it look like it once did.” A third wrote: “Whoever buys it better repaint all that s**t again.”
The five-bed, six-bathroom mansion located in Winnetka, Illinois, looks very different to when it first featured in the films. This is the first time the film has been on the market since 2012 after it had a brief stint as an AirBnb in 2021.
American estate agents The Dawn McKenna Group hailed the property “one of the most famous houses in the world.”
“Nestled on a picturesque, tree-lined street in the heart of east Winnetka and elegantly poised behind a wrought-iron gate, the property epitomises classic Chicago suburban architecture,” the listing read.
“The residence itself is a masterpiece of traditional style with an effortlessly flowing floor plan brimming with warmth, character, and exquisitely crafted detail. Fully renovated and expanded in 2018, the current owners took the utmost care in maintaining the architectural detail and integrity of the home’s most memorable and recognisable spaces.”
