Kate made clear she considers herself just one of millions coming to terms with a dreaded diagnosis. That showed how caring she is and her ability to bring people together

A nation brought to tears by the heartfelt words the Princess of Wales delivered from a park bench on Friday is also marvelling at her courage.

What Kate is going through could happen to any of us. It sadly happens to many of us. Few need to make a public announcement. But Kate made clear she considers herself just one of millions coming to terms with a dreaded diagnosis. That showed how caring she is and her ability to bring people together.

It was a quality the Queen displayed time and again during her 70-year reign. No wonder Kate is now the most popular royal. She bravely faced down the internet trolls who peddled cruel social media conspiracies based on nothing more substantial than the nasty workings inside their heads.

That has shamed some into apologising. It should be enough to make the others stop their viciousness. Her job as Princess of Wales is to be in the public eye but that does not make her public property. Decent people respect that. Which is why tonight, Kate and husband William released another statement through Kensington Palace saying how deeply touched they are by all the messages of support from well-wishers here and around the world.

She wanted to make her announcement in her own good time and for good reason. Her young children also needed space to come to terms with her illness. The start of Easter school holidays means they can do that within the love and privacy of their family as public duties go on hold. Kate told those struggling like her that they are not alone. Her strength and positivity should be their inspiration. The motto on our front page masthead is for all our readers. But today it is especially for Kate. We are with you.

Care is crucial

Care home residents who died alone because of Covid restrictions were among the pandemic’s most tragic victims. While most care homes returned to previous visiting rules, some reportedly still put up barriers to who is allowed in.

This is not just unnecessary but unacceptable and campaigners are demanding a legal right to free access for a named person to be with loved ones. It requires a simple change in the law and Keir Starmer is to be congratulated for pledging to make it if he becomes PM. In good times or bad, no one should die without someone they love by their side.

Tattoo are one

Charlotte and Daniel Lonsdale hired a tattoo artist to permanently mark the big day for themselves and their guests. We wish them all the best – but should times get tough, they’ll always have a shoulder to crayon.
