Multiple weather warnings are in place across the UK as Storm Amy crosses the Alantic
Storm Amy has battered parts of the UK with powerful winds and heavy rain – but London has avoided the worst of the disruption and there is calmer, drier spells on the way too. The capital saw breezy conditions through Saturday with the odd shower, but remained largely dry and bright, with highs of 18°C.
While amber weather warnings were in force in Scotland and Northern Ireland, no such alerts were issued for London. According to the Met Office, unsettled weather will linger into Sunday, when early sunshine will give way to cloud and occasional rain. Winds will stay blustery, with temperatures around 19°C. Looking further ahead, forecasters say the westerly pattern will persist into next week, though there is a chance of calmer, drier spells by mid-October.
We will see some strong wind tomorrow (Sunday) – with gusts up to 35mph. But the weather should pick up over the next few days with the wind easing. This should peak on Monday, October 6, when temperatures may hit 20C.
From Monday, October 6, to Wednesday, October 8 it will be predominantly dry through this period with variable cloud. Risk of overnight fog patches lingering into the morning. But winds will be easing to become light.
Forecast for London
Today (Saturday) This morning will be mostly dry with sunny periods, although scattered showers are possible in western parts. During the afternoon, a band of cloud and patchy rain will move south across the region, clearing by the evening to leave some late bright spells. It will remain windy throughout, with gales possible along the coasts. Temperatures will reach around 14 °C.
Tonight The evening will turn dry with some sunshine before long clear periods develop overnight. Winds will gradually ease, though it will still feel breezy at times. Lows will dip to around 7 °C under variable cloud and clear skies.
Sunday A bright and sunny start is expected for many places. Cloud will increase gradually from the west through the day, with the chance of a few light showers, though most areas will stay dry with sunny spells. It will be breezy at first, but winds will ease into the afternoon. Temperatures will rise to around 16 °C.
Monday A predominantly dry day with variable cloud and some bright or sunny spells. Temperatures will be mild for the time of year, remaining close to or just above average. It could have a high of 20C.
Tuesday Cloudier conditions will set in, turning overcast and breezy at times. However, it should stay largely dry with some late brightness possible in the evening. High of 18C.
Wednesday Cloud will push in from the northwest, bringing spells of light rain or drizzle through the day. Conditions will improve later, turning drier and clearer by the evening. Winds will remain light, and temperatures will stay near or slightly above average. High of 18C.
Across the UK, about 42,000 homes remained without power and there was widespread travel disruption as Storm Amy swept across the country on Saturday.
Many railway lines and roads were closed and ferry services were disrupted amid high winds with gusts of more than 100mph recorded in some exposed areas.
In London, Royal Parks was forced to close all parks in London due to “severe wind gusts”, including Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, and St James Park. A Royal Parks statement read: “Due to severe wind gusts caused by Storm Amy, all of the royal parks, plus Brompton Cemetery and Victoria Tower Gardens will be closed on Saturday October 4.
“This closure includes all park roads and cycleways, cafes and kiosks, parks sports venues, the Serpentine lido and boating lake, and the royal parks shop.”
Irish police said a man died in a “weather-related” incident in the Letterkenny area of County Donegal, Republic of Ireland, shortly after 4.15pm on Friday.
