It’s been a gruesome week for London with two dead, eight stabbed, and a man shot. On Monday (July 28) in Bermondsey, a 58-year-old man and a 27-year-old man were fatally knifed at a ‘business unit’ during a quadruple stabbing.
The Metropolitan Police has clarified the largescale stabbing was not terror related. There were also knifings in West Ham, Newham, Kilburn, and Mayfair.
Meanwhile, south of the river saw a man shot right outside a busy hospital in the early hours of Wednesday (July 30) morning. And just today (Friday, August 1) a woman was attacked in Shepherd’s Bush and taken to hospital.
Despite the bleak news, the latest figures from May 2024 to April 2025 showed a three per cent drop in violent crime across the capital compared to same period during the previous year. This is a drop of around 257,000 incidents.
National statistics show that while overall murders and gun incidents have fallen, offences involving knives or sharp articles have seen slight increases – about two per cent year‑on‑year up to December 2024. London-specific initiatives, such as its Violence Reduction Unit, have supported reductions in youth reoffending and homicide rates.
