Everyone knows it’s important to moisturise – but how often should we actually be using it? And how much of the stuff should we be putting on each time? Skincare expert and PCA Skin Ambassador Dr Paris Acharya is on hand to offer some important advice

Whether you’re a pro when it comes to skincare or if you take a more laidback approach, there is one thing we all know we should be doing – moisturising.

While it’s a very simple product, many people still aren’t really sure how much they should be using – which can lead to not applying enough or wasting product by using too much.

Luckily, the experts at PCA Skin are on hand to offer some guidance – and she also clarifies how often we need to be putting it on, especially as we enter the summer months.

Speaking to The Mirror, skincare expert Dr Paris Acharya, who is a leading aesthetic doctor and PCA Skin Ambassador, says: “You should always apply a moisturiser daily, both morning and night, as a minimum requirement, using a 5p sized amount each time.

“When you’re on holiday or exposed to the sun to a higher level than usual, I would recommend moisturising as often as you can, especially as soon as you come out of the sun.

“Make sure to also opt for a hydrating facial SPF that will act as a moisturiser and protectant in one, so that your skin is receiving maximum benefits throughout the day.”

She also offers so helpful advice about what to do once you come inside after a day enjoying the sunshine.

She tells us: “Once you’ve come out of the sun, it’s important to wash your face immediately before applying your moisturiser and other hydrating products, as you want to clear the skin of all dirt, bacteria and heavy-duty oils that will have gathered throughout the day.

“If you were to apply your moisturiser straight onto your skin without washing previous product layers off before, it could result in clogged pores which will cause breakouts.

“Double cleanse your face with a hydrating creamy cleanser and moisture-infused face wash before then applying your hydrating serums and a moisturiser.

“Always follow with an SPF as the last step in your routine – even if it’s night time. Remember that the UVA rays from artificial light sources such as your phone, TV, laptop etc can continuously cause ageing and skin damage, even if the sun isn’t out.”
