The countdown to the UK’s 2024 general election is on. And with voting set for July 4, people have very little time to register.

Whether you’ve already chosen your candidate or are still weighing up your options, it’s crucial to ensure you’re registered to vote. If not, you won’t be able to have your say.

You have until June 18 to register, giving you around 24 hours to get it done. So, how and when can you register to vote? Here’s what you need to know.

How can I register to vote?

The simplest way is to register online here, a process that usually takes around five minutes. Make sure you have certain details to hand, such as your address and National Insurance number, or other identification documents like your passport.

Once you’ve registered, your local electoral registration office will review your application and get in touch if they need more information. If you’re unable to vote online for any reason, you can register using a paper form instead.

What’s the deadline for the General Election 2024?

If you want to cast your vote, you’ll need to register by 11.59pm on June 18, 2024.

Who’s eligible to vote?

To vote, you must be 18 or over on the day of the election and be a British citizen, a qualifying Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland.

Do I need to register for every election?

If you’ve moved house or changed your name since the last election in 2019, you may need to re-register. It’s best to check with your electoral registration office as soon as possible.
