A cleaning and hygiene expert has revealed people may be making a common mistake when it comes to cleaning their toilets – and called the brush habit “disgusting”

If you use a scrubbing brush when you clean your toilet, listen up, as you may be making a common mistake.

A cleaning expert has revealed we’re all making one crucial mistake when it comes to cleaning toilets and it’s all down to how you use your scrubbing brush.

Hygiene expert Mary Futher, who goes by Madame Sweat warned people against putting the brush straight back in the holder after using it. The cleaning whizz regularly takes to social media to share her tips and tricks for household jobs and personal hygiene and urges people to change their toilet cleaning habits.

She took to Instagram in a recent post and said: “If you just finish washing your toilet with this and then you do this, that’s disgusting.” Mary then explained how people would clean their brush with a scrubbing brush, and then put it straight back in the holder without cleaning it and suggested a much better and “hygienic” way to do it.

Mary informed her followers: “After you finish cleaning the debris in your toilet bowl, then you want to wash the brush with the same cleanser that you use to clean your toilet bowl.” She added: “After that, spray the brush itself with hydrogen peroxide. Then use this drying technique before you put it back in the holder. Now that’s hygienic.”

She captioned the post: “Not cleaning this before putting away is disgusting,” and many cleaning fans were left repulsed after finding out others don’t clean their toilet brushes properly. One Instagram user wrote: “Oh man I thought everyone cleaned the brush after cleaning the toilet,” while another added: “Love this cleaning tip.”

A third penned: “If you haven’t been doing this then we can’t be friends.” However, others admitted they hadn’t been cleaning their toilet brush thoroughly as one person commented: “I never knew what to do with it honestly, I just keep it in between the seat to dry then put it back but I knew it had to be more.”Oh good!! I never knew how to clean it thank you.”

One person shared their cleaning routine and chimed: “Just put bleach in the holder and let it sit in there before next use” a second wrote: “And you could spray a little bit of the hydrogen peroxide in the bottom of the brush holder also.”
