A man has shared how he discovered he was accidentally dating his cousin after meeting her in a bar – and now lives in fear she will expose their relationship to their family

A man has shared his ‘horror’ after discovering he has been accidentally dating his cousin after meeting her in a bar. The anonymous man explained how he started dating a woman he met in a bar after they hit it off right away – and slept with her “more time than he cares to admit”.

But after looking her up on Facebook, he came to realise his ‘horrific’ mistake. He said on Reddit: “I live in a major city of a small country the city population is 600,000. My mother has 12 brothers and sisters. My grandmother and grandfather had five children before separating and both then remarrying having two and six more respectively.

“My mother was the youngest of the original marriage and was only two when they split. The family dynamic has always caused infighting to the point where I had never actually met my cousin before obviously, and I’ve not met five of my mothers’ brothers and sisters, or their children.”

The man says he uses Facebook to keep in touch with family on his father’s side, who live on the other side of the world. He added: “I have six facebook friend’s, as of today I’ve not logged into Facebook for over four months and that is my standard of use and why I didnt have the urge to look her up sooner.

  • ‘Entitled mum orders I wake her son up before school run – I taught her a lesson’
  • ‘I caught my mum sleeping with my husband – I can’t erase the image from my mind’
  • “I was on Facebook because I got a message from the aforementioned family and curiosity got the better of me and I decided to look her up and check her wall and pictures, and I slowly put the pieces together from there.

“I had suspicions so I sat her down and started asking questions and her mother’s maiden name confirmed my suspicions and I told her. We agreed to never tell the family and keep our mouths completely shut, but going forward she met some of my friends and I met hers which means we could at some point be found out.”

Now, after going their separate ways, he says he lives in fear she will expose their accidental relationship. He added: “This happened six months ago and I am finally over the trauma enough to laugh about it. Now I am just hoping that all of my family go to the grave still hating each other.”

Commenting on his post, one user said: “I guess we are taught that doing that with cousins is weird but if you never knew each other and are basically strangers just like anyone else, it’s not that weird in reality but saying it aloud makes it sound odd. Another user added: ” I’m pretty certain there’s nothing wrong with cousins dating/marrying/whatevering. Especially if you only share one grandparent – that really isn’t inbreeding.

A third user said: “Something sort of similar happened to my girlfriend’s friend. He had just broken up with his girlfriend and wanted to sleep around a bit, well one night they were all hanging out, and he brought some girl they never met. A couple of hours later, they left.

“The next day he came back saying they had sex. The day after that he showed his grandma a picture of her, and his grandma told him they were second cousins and she would be coming for the family reunion in a week. So don’t feel bad.”
