I bought this ‘best ever’ mattress from Dreams that’s transformed my kid’s sleep

If you’re looking for a mattress that offers support for a teenager’s growing body, this Team GB option is perfect

Do we ever really consider the needs of our children when it comes to the mattress they sleep on? Well I can tell you I hadn’t, and I will also tell you that my 11-year-old has had more beds than I’ve had in my 43 years. From a toddler bed to a kid’s single bed, a longed-for bunk-bed-come-desk-come-wardrobe, to the worst decision ever made – the daybed.

Buying a daybed seemed like a relatively good idea at the time, but it didn’t take long before my daughter started to loathe everything about it. It didn’t allow her to hang her long growing legs either side when needed, and the super thin and awkward mattress with zero cushion or support for her growing body was definitely doing more harm than good.

It was at least a year of grumbling about how uncomfortable the bed was and how many pains she was experiencing due to the lack of cushion, bounce and all-round support she needed as she slept. She would also wake in the night complaining that her bones hurt, so eventually I had no choice but to agree that a new bed was needed.

After visiting a few bed shops in search of the perfect mattress, heading to the likes of Dreams, Bensons For Beds, Furniture Village and even Dunelm. It was at Dreams where we found the perfect mattress, opting for the Dream Team Ashbourne Pocket Sprung Mattress in a small double (4ft) since my daughter has a tiny little box room.

The small double mattress which is currently priced at £799 down from £1,599, saving shoppers £800, comes complete with 1,683 pocket springs where “each individually wrapped spring reacts to your body, offering fully supportive comfort.”

These supportive springs have been designed to mould to your body while absorbing any motion movement if someone were sleeping beside you, and it’s also available in a single, small double, double, king and super king.

The mattress is 10-inches in height giving you plenty of room to sink right into it, and I had the pleasure of doing just that and I can confirm that your body instantly goes into relaxation mode; feeling fully supported, you can almost feel your muscles starting to tingle. It’s fair to say that I didn’t want to get off the mattress once I started to relax.

My daughter, who is absolutely loving her new mattress said: “It’s the best mattress ever,” and added that it’s “so cosy” for her to snuggle up under the duvet on. I can also confirm that there have been no more complaints about sore muscles and aching bones (in the middle of the night) and there certainly haven’t been any more restless nights where she’s unable to sleep right through.

A very wise person who knows absolutely everything there is to know about mattresses, Marcus, who works for Benson’s for Beds said that he always advises parents to “never go for fancy bed frames as you’ll end up spending lots of money buying several beds over the years.” Instead he suggests, “buying a simple bed frame and spending more money getting hold of a decent mattress for children and teenagers that will always support their growing bodies.” I wish someone had told me sooner.

The great thing about Dreams is that you get a 100-night trial, so if you’re not happy with your mattress you can return it and get your money back, and it comes with a one year guarantee.

Once I ordered the Dream Team Ashbourne Pocket Sprung Mattress, the customer service was excellent, I received emails and texts advising me of the delivery date and estimated time it would arrive, and then a reminder one or two days before, and a call on the day confirming the exact delivery time.

You can also opt for your old mattress to be removed and the new one placed where it needs to go. Unfortunately as I was waiting for a bed frame to be delivered I had to leave the mattress in my living room until I had the bed up and running. Once it was, the downside was that the mattress was a nightmare to carry upstairs.

The mattress handles reside on the sides only, but it would have been a much easier job carrying it up the stairs had they also been at the ends too. It is also quite a very heavy mattress weighing in at 36kg, so if you’re thinking of getting one, make sure you get it delivered to its final destination.
