Greggs always attracts queues at lunchtimes full of people ready to pick up a sandwich or a hot pastry, but some customers have claimed one ingredient is putting them off ordering certain items
Greggs is a lunchtime staple for us Brits. Whether it’s a sausage roll for a snack, a coffee to go, or a sandwich at lunchtime, the chains are filled with hungry customers throughout the day. However, one customer has claimed they have been put off from ordering one thing for lunch because of an ingredient they don’t like.
In a page on Reddit, where fans celebrate the iconic delights of Greggs and connect with fellow pastry enthusiasts, one person asked others if they had noticed that red onion is often added into sandwiches.
The Greggs fan said: “Is there something I’m missing with people loving red onion? It seems to be in almost all their sandwich offerings and as an avid onion hater I can’t for the life of me buy what would otherwise be a fine sandwich. Am I just weird?”
“Same here, not a fan of onions. Only need a little and I notice,” commented one.
One other said: “I can’t stand red or white onions so I agree with this, you can still taste them after you pick them out which doesn’t help. Nevermind red onions actually being purple, but that’s a whole other annoyance.”

One other said: “They do seem to love to add that to everything lol, it does look colourful so maybe they’re thinking that, I don’t think it negatively affects taste too much but doesn’t really add to it too.”
“Fellow onion hater here, I also struggle with buying pre-made food like this. So many Greggs sandwiches I’d have tried if they didn’t have onion in them!,” one other said.
“I like red onions so it’s fine for me,” said one other. “AGREED! I love onion but hate red onion,” commented one other.
Another agreed: “Omg I absolutely feel this! Ruining everything with bloody raw red onions.”
One other suggested: “If you dislike red onion or feel like not having any this time, you can request for a sandwich to be made for you without any. I work in Greggs and we’ve had customers requesting items without specific ingredient. It’s never been an issue to oblige. Also you’re right. There’s too much red onion and lettuce in the sandwiches.”
People said they also noticed the same thing about mayonnaise. One individual said: “This is how I feel about mayo. I hate it but it’s in so many sandwiches everywhere.”
A second said: “I hate mayo AND onion, no bought sandwiches for me.”
Another wrote: “I loathe mayo. Every time people suggest ‘getting a quick sandwich’ your only option is a limp ham sandwich, if you’re lucky. It’s in all the fucking sandwiches.”
One other observed: “I hate cucumbers and they feel like they’re in every sandwich and wrap.”
But others said they like red onion in their sandwiches. “Red onion is awesome so don’t see a problem,” commented one. “I don’t trust adults that are picky eaters,” added another.
A third wrote: “Red onion tastes much better for sandwiches because they’re bit sweeter than ordinary onions.”
“I like red onions so it’s fine for me,” added one other. Another said: “Red onion and mayo are two of my favourite things. Yay for me I guess?”
