A woman has taken to social media to seek advice after admitting she has been avoiding saying her boyfriend’s name throughout their six-month relationship because she can’t get the R sound right
A woman is seeking advice after admitting she can’t pronounce her boyfriend’s name – and has avoided saying it altogether for six months.
In a confession on Reddit, the French woman says her boyfriend’s name is “fairly common” in English and Spanish – but as these aren’t her native tongue, she struggles to pronounce the ‘R’ sound correctly. But now after dating for six months, she doesn’t know how to bring it up with him and is embarrassed about the entire situation.
She said: “I just can’t roll my Rs the way him and his friends roll their Rs when saying his name. I don’t want to call his name the English way since he seems to prefer it when people use the Spanish pronunciation but I’m so afraid to butcher it and disappoint him that I’d rather not say it. I think he’s starting to notice because he asked me when was the last time I called him by his name.”
Not wanting to confess the truth, she lied to him saying she called him by his name early on in their relationship but switched to pet names as she got more comfortable with him. Seeking advice on how to handle this situation, she added: “The truth is that had I called him by his name in the beginning, he could have corrected me and I could have practiced with him rather than me practicing alone. I’m too far into the relationship to mispronounce his name now and I can’t get out of this situation.”

In response, one user commented: “Girl, my husband and I have been together for 20 years (high school sweethearts) and my middle name is Lebanese. It has an R that needs to be rolled real hard. He can’t do it. He’s never been able to say my middle name and I gotta tell ya, it’s never bothered me.
“I think it’s cute and funny. I get a first name is different with how often you’d need to say it, but just come clean. One day yall will most likely laugh about it.” Another user added: “You’re still alive and functioning, try rolling those R’s and maybe one day it’ll get good enough to pass!” A third user said: “Just tell him the truth. If he laughs and helps you then he is a keeper.”
