Choosing what to wear to attend a wedding can be tricky but one woman was left in tears after purchasing what she believed to be an appropriate dress off Amazon, only to end up angering the bride

A woman left a wedding in tears after the bride blasted her outfit and the colour for its apparent double meaning. Despite the woman’s sadness over the encounter, her cousin – the bride – is now insisting she owes her a public apology, as she blames her for ruining her wedding day.

Wedding guest outfit etiquette can be a contentious subject and while most people know not to wear all white to someone else’s big day, there are other colours that may be perceived as risqué or inappropriate, too. A 23-year-old woman was looking forward to attending her cousin’s wedding and when she received a list of approved colours to wear for the big day, she made sure to choose a dress in a shade from the bride’s list.

The bride, 25, wanted all her guests to sport autumnal colours so the woman picked a burgundy number which fit the colour scheme expected of guests.

The woman’s dress, purchased off Amazon, is fitted and comes in full length and features a Bardot neckline with long sleeves. The woman explained she has quite a voluptuous chest and bottom, in stark contrast to her slender, more willowy cousin.

But when her cousin, the bride, saw her, she was furious. The bride asked they go and speak somewhere privately.

On Reddit, the woman explained: “Once the door shuts, it’s like all the fake smiles and warmth disappeared and she starts berating me about how I wore ‘red’ to her wedding to try and signify that I wanted to sleep with her husband!!!”

Some people believe wearing red to a wedding is code for either wanting to sleep with the groom, or showing other guests you have bonked them in the past. It’s not believed across the board and in some cultures, wearing red is a respectful, standard element of bridal attire.

The woman was stunned, especially as she chose to wear burgundy which was on the bride’s approved colour list. Additionally, she’s happily married to her husband who she’s been with since they were teenagers.

They have two children together – a five-year-old son and a six month old daughter – and the wedding was the first time any of them would be meeting the groom.

The woman continued: “She went on to say that I was a s**t and that I should be ashamed of myself for wearing something so revealing and that my husband was probably so embarrassed by me.”

As the bride’s fury escalated, the woman – who felt she “looked great and modest” – became upset and “started to cry”.

She said: “She made me feel gross about my body and embarrassed because I just was standing there and she refused to listen to me. I know she was getting loud too because it didn’t take long for my husband and my mum to find us.

“My mum had my daughter in her hands and said that she was looking for me because my baby was getting hungry and fussy. Once she looked at me she immediately knew something was off because I rarely ever cry.”

Eventually, she told her husband she wanted to leave so they did.

This angered the bride even more because people noticed them leaving and wanted to know what had happened.

She added: “The next morning, my cousin sends me a barrage of text messages, Facebook messages, and Snapchats demanding that I publicly apologise on Facebook for dressing so scandalous to get her husband’s attention at her wedding and for trying to make it all about me by leaving early, embarrassing her.”

The woman’s mother and uncle “told a few people” about what the bride did and many people didn’t take her side, recognising she hadn’t done anything wrong or dressed inappropriately at all.

She has since blocked her cousin to stop her relentless messages, and is planning on cutting off all communication with her.

Many Reddit users theorised the bride was jealous of her cousin’s figure in the dress and lashed out.
