Oliver Bowering, 22, claims to have the most ‘hated’ job in the UK – and after sharing what a normal day looks like for him, many are desperate to get a similar job for themselves

While it may be difficult to know what your dream job or career is, many will have a list of roles they don’t want to do. However, one man has now claimed he has ‘the most hated’ job in the UK.

You may think this is a bad thing – but Oliver Bowering claims his career is a lot better than it sounds. In order to show just how easy it can be, he posted a snippet of what a normal day at work looks like for him. The video has left many wanting to know more about how to get a job like his one.

Taking to TikTok, Oliver said: “Welcome to the day in the life of a 22-year-old in the easiest but most hated job in the UK… If you have a driver’s licence, you hate me.”

So what is this elusive role, you may be asking? It turns out, Oliver works in traffic management.

Showing what the role entails, Oliver put out a traffic cone on the side of the road where he was standing . He then hopped into his car and moved to his next task.

After getting to the area where the roadworks would be going ahead, he went on to count 44 road lines in order to find the right place for his next stop.

Upon arrival, he put up the road works ahead sign. Then, it was time for his next job. Oliver drove to where he needs to put up another sign, telling drivers that temporary traffic lights are coming up.

He continued to erect more warning signs about potential driving hazards, including advice about what lane is being worked on and information about single lane traffic.

Other tasks included implementing temporary traffic lights, as Oliver added: “The job has been installed. I’m on a 9.30 ’til 3pm permit, so the job has to be off by 3pm.”

For the remainder of his shift, he spent time in his van until it was time to remove the signage. It’s also his responsibility to stay on site and make sure traffic is running smoothly throughout the road work.

People were intrigued by the job and quickly took to the comments section to share their thoughts. Many also reassured Oliver that they do not hate him!

One wrote: “It’s not you guys I hate. it’s the council or whoever plans it.” Another agreed: “You make our roadworks safe, so good lad.”

A third asked: “Where do I apply?” Meanwhile, a fourth added: “Traffic management is my current job – I love it.”

The average base salary for a Traffic Management Operator in the UK is around £34,000 per year in the UK, with variations based on experience and location. Pay structures often include additional benefits like holiday pay and shift allowances for nights or weekends, according to Glassdoor.
