Life outside of London has become increasingly popular with young people in recent years. Many are looking for a change from the capital’s fast pace.

I have lived in St Albans my whole life, and I have seen more and more people moving to the area. They are discovering that life outside London can be more rewarding and less stressful.

St Albans offers a mix of vibrant pubs, beautiful parks, and fascinating history. There is something for everyone, from families to couples seeking a fresh start.

St Albans regularly features as one of the best cities to live in the UK, and there are many reasons behind it. Here are five reasons why it is one of the best up-and-coming cities to live in, along with some of my favourite spots.

Fast trains, easy commute

Taking around 20 minutes on the Thameslink service from St Albans City station to St Pancras International, commuting to London has never been easier. Services run every 10 minutes, carrying passengers from this vibrant city straight into the heart of the capital.

For those working in Central London, it offers the perfect balance – the energy and opportunities of the city within easy reach, whilst enjoying the benefits of a home life outside the hustle and bustle. St Albans continues to grow year after year, making it an increasingly attractive place to live.

Pubs and vibrant nightlife

One of London’s main draws is its great pubs and atmosphere, but St Albans offers the same charm, just in its own unique style.

The city centre is dotted with small arcades and specialist shops, ranging from locally owned independents to well-known high street brands. Pubs are never far away, from the historic Ye Olde Fighting Cocks – one of the oldest pubs in the country – to cosy spots lining the high street.

Life in St Albans feels special, with like-minded people filling the streets and a strong sense of community. The twice-weekly market, held every Wednesday and Saturday, blends the charm of a traditional market with a modern twist, making it a favourite for locals and visitors alike.

Roman heritage meets stunning Cathedral

St Albans has a rich and unique history, once serving as an important city in the Roman Empire and a major trading hub. Just outside the city centre, the Verulamium Museum offers visitors the chance to explore what the city was like in Roman times.

The most iconic part of St Albans’ history is its cathedral, visible for miles and instantly recognisable. Built in the 11th century and granted cathedral status in 1877, it remains a central landmark, hosting weekly services and daily tours.

Quick routes to airports and beyond

Key links to the M25 and M1 give residents quick access to major roads connecting the north and south of the country, making travel across the UK straightforward.

These road connections also make it easy to reach airports, with Luton just a 20-minute drive away and Heathrow around 35 minutes. Whether for business or leisure, it’s simple to set off and explore the world from St Albans.

Green space

One of the main reasons people choose to move out of London is to enjoy more green space. St Albans delivers exactly that. Right in the city centre, the 100-acre Verulamium Park is a perfect example of the open spaces you can enjoy outside the capital.

Beyond that, there are plenty of other parks and nature spots within a short drive, giving residents easy access to the countryside.
