A fish and chip shop owner has shared some surprising revelations about the nation’s favourite seaside takeaway – including a very bizarre request from one customer
A fish and chip shop owner has revealed the most bizarre request he’s ever had – and it’s unlikely to take off with his customers.
Fish and chips are a great British tradition, with some 22 per cent of the nation visiting their local chippie every single week. Christian Motta is the owner of the Grosvenor Fish Bar in Norwich, and he knows all too well how much people enjoy the yummy fried food. Just recently, he shared some secrets of the trade, including one customer who took things a little too far.
He told the Express: “When we first opened, a couple asked us to deep fry the top tier of their frozen wedding cake for their first anniversary.
“We told them to slice the frozen cake and bring it in towards the end of the day, so it would be the last item cooked and then we could change the oil after. They decided not to fry it in the end – a wise decision!”
And he further revealed, “We also serve a burger – The Ground Beast Extreme – an eight-ounce burger with cheese and battered bacon, lettuce, tomato and po’ boy sauce. As if that was not enough going on a burger, a customer added a pineapple fritter and curry sauce poured over it. It was not the last time she ordered it.”
The Grosvenor Fish Bar, which has thousands of five-star reviews on Google has been branded as “an icon of Norwich”, and a part of Christian’s family for more than 60 years.
“Our morning starts at 7am, prepping the potatoes – peeling 300 kilos and storing in a large tank until they need to be chipped,” Christian revealed. “On busy days we will have to do another 300 kilos after lunch. The fish needs to be cut, sauces made and stocktaking and ordering are all done before we open at 11.30am.”
He’s not the only one to have received a weird food order. A Nando’s customer previously left people horrified after ordering a chicken burger with 50 additional slices of cheese.
The restaurant allows people to customise their meals when ordering through an app for home delivery, and one worker shared the enormous receipt of the bizarre request which had come through on Reddit – as well as a photo of the highly-stacked burger.
The customer had ordered a grilled chicken burger with 50 cheddar cheese slices (with each adding 60p to the bill), as well as garlic peri peri sauce and 10 chicken wings.
“That is obscene,” one person wrote in response, while another joked: “Cheesus christ that’s a hefty amount of cheddar.”
