A daughter threatened never to see her dad again if he shares her ‘expensive college’ fund with her step-sister, whose own fund was used up to cover her mum’s medical bills
A dad is caught between his wife and daughter over the youngster’s college fund that his partner demanded should be shared for her other child’s education. The couple have been together for well over a decade and each have kid from a previous marriage.
However, last year his wife was so ill that she had to use up all of her older daughter’s college on expenses. He explained on Reddit: “My wife and I have been married for 14 years. We each have one daughter from previous marriages who are going to college this year and we each had a college fund for our own child.
“Last year my wife got very sick and she used all of my stepdaughter’s college fund to pay for the expenses.” His wife is now “insisting” that he should share his eldest daughter’s college fund with his stepdaughter because hers has all gone.
But his own daughter, who chose to go to a pricey college has threatened to leave home and never to see him again if he splits the money. He said: “My daughter told me that if I do this she will leave and I will never see her again. She chose a very expensive college thinking she could graduate debt-free as I promised her.”
The dad assured her that the money was hers only and that he wouldn’t give it to anyone else because he didn’t want to lose her. “Now my wife is mad at me and thinks I’m an a*****e,” he lamented. The post kicked off a debate among users about what the right thing to do is, with some slamming them for using one of their daughter’s college funds in the first place for medical expenses.
“They absolutely should’ve came up with a different plan for her medical bills. They could’ve asked for a payment plan, sold some belongings like jewelry to help pay it down. Using up the stepdaughter’s college fund was rather reckless to do,” one person wrote. Another added: “This was a horrible decision on their part and completely unfair to the stepdaughter.”

One user was in full support of the dad, claiming: “The wife wouldn’t have raided her own daughter’s college fund to help out the stepdaughter, GUARANTEED. He’s right to not steal from his daughter… they wouldn’t have done it for him.” While someone else believed that the actual culprit of this dilemma is not even a person: “The real a*****e here is a healthcare system that requires you to choose between your life and your kid’s college account.”
