A user on Reddit shared how they saved £16 on their fish and chips and shares to others how they could do it too, it only too one simple change that made the biggest difference
Saving on your weekly takeaway can feel like the ultimate win-win, and one Reddit user showed just how they managed to save £16 on their usual fish and chips meal.
Shocked and impressed, the user told other in their thread that only one simple change saved them over £10 and even showed the receipt as proof.
“I saved £16 earlier by collecting my fish and chips rather than getting it delivered on Just Eat, the post was titled. “Exact same order from the same chip shop. The fish cake entry was added and removed, mistake by the bossman.”
One example from the recipe shows that a portion of large chips from their local costs £3.80 in the shop, but £5.90 on the app. Similarly, cod costs £7.90 in the shop but almost £5 more on the app at £12.25. Even the same cans of drink cost 40p more on the app. Not to mention, delivery fee, service fee and bag fee all adding up to the bill on the app.
The user’s total bill in the shop was £21.90, whilst on the app it was a costly £16.13 more, at £38.03, for the same items.

Other Reddit users shared their thoughts on the money-saving hack. One said: “This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, these apps are daylight robbery.” Another expressed: “That’s ridiculous”.
A third simply said: “This is why I don’t get food delivered.” While a fourth suggested: “You should only ever use takeout apps when you have a discount code/promotion”.
Others on Reddit were sharing how the novelty of treating yourself to a takeaway has been lost when it comes to delivery apps. Where you would go out to your local chippy and get yourself a takeaway to enjoy, now in a matter of minutes you can click on the app and get it sent to you multiple times a week.
While some mention it is about convenience, others shared that we have lost the human touch to these experiences. They also added how this has been the case since the Covid pandemic, to ensure restaurants could manage, these apps were becoming more popular, which made sense at the time, but not anymore.
The question arises, on whether people are right in highlighting that special experiences of having a takeaway has truly been forgotten, or is convenience and ease more valuable to people? However, one thing for sure is that the price comparison is stark, so the cheapest way is most likely, the best way.
