A man was left gobsmacked and ’embarrassed’ when he took his wife and their children out for dinner at a restaurant, as his spouse pulled something shocking out of her handbag
Bad manners in a restaurant can be a real turn-off in a relationship.
If you’ve ever been on a dinner date with a potential partner and noticed that they chew with their mouth open or that they’re rude to the staff, you may well decide within minutes that you never want to see them again. But what if the person who shocked you with their rude restaurant etiquette was your spouse?
That’s the predicament one man found himself in after he took his wife and their two children out for a bite to eat and was left horrified by what his spouse did in the middle of their meal.
In a post on Reddit, the man explained that his family was spending the day in a “different city” and decided to stop for lunch at a restaurant that just so happened to be vegan. While the family are not vegans themselves, they had no issue eating at the establishment, and the dad insisted his children are “great eaters” so wouldn’t be fussy.
When it came to order, their four-year-old son said he wasn’t hungry so the couple didn’t order him anything, stating he could have some food from their plates if he decided he wanted something later on.
While they were eating, however, the man’s wife did something he never expected – she pulled a sausage roll out of her handbag and tried to give it to her son in the middle of a vegan restaurant.
The man explained: “During lunch, my wife kept asking if he wanted something, but the answer was no. At one point she went into her bag and pulled out a sausage roll that we’d bought while walking around earlier.
“I immediately told her to put it away. She has an annoying habit of thinking she can whip out non-restaurant-bought food for a child, which we’ve clashed about before, so she said her usual ‘nobody will care, he’s four’. I followed up with a firmer ‘not only is it not purchased from here, you’ve got meat out in a vegan restaurant. Put it away.’
“She did, but was clearly frosty for the rest of the meal. When the kid inevitably said he was hungry a short while later, he ate a decent amount off both our plates with no issue. I don’t understand how she didn’t instantly see it was a d**k move, but maybe I’m being the a**hole and it’s actually okay to be so oblivious just because you have a child.”
Commenters on the video firmly backed the man, stating his wife was out of order for getting meat out in a vegan restaurant, regardless of whether it was for her son or not.
One person said: “I’m a vegan and my partner is an omnivore. I understand that the world is not vegan but I expect that a vegan restaurant or function would not have any meat. Your wife was being very disrespectful and if she was in my establishment I would ask her to leave.”
Another added: “Just terrible behaviour. I’m not vegan myself but I certainly wouldn’t be this disrespectful towards people who choose to be vegan.”
