Aoife McElwee shared a tip for anyone ordering drinks in Bali to look out for plastic straws which have been cut
A Northern Irish traveller has shared a warning for anyone travelling to Bali in the future. Aoife McElwee, a personal trainer, recently shared an experience she encountered while ordering a drink.
The PT and content creator has spent a number of months living in Bali, sharing daily vlogs of her time there. In a recent video from earlier in July, Aoife gave a public service announcement for people to be wary when receiving a plastic straw with a drink.
Having ordered a can of Coke, Aoife also received a plastic straw, but noticed the top had been cut off. She said: “This is a tip for anyone coming to Bali, or possibly all of South East Asia, to not use plastic straws, because look how much this was cut.
“This was obviously used by someone else, and they just cut the top of it – and give you it out to drink from it. How disgusting is that, so no thanks, I will not be using that.”
Aoife’s video has been viewed over a massive 1.4 million times, racking up 30,200 likes and 210 comments. A number of people shared their own experiences, explaining that the practice Aoife experienced doesn’t happen everywhere.
Joe assured: “Never had this in Bali but something new, all places gave us straws all wrapped up! Must be depending where you’re going.”

Peechy Keen wrote, “I get flack for having a travel straw, it ain’t looking so crazy now,” while Koutnee said, “That’s diabolical.”
Pri said: “We saw someone washing a load of “single use” plastic straws in the street outside their restaurant in Vietnam.” Another viewer said: “There’s little kits of cutlery I take everywhere. I’m now going to buy a metal straw to add to it.”
