Would you pay £24 for a chippy dinner? A woman has shared her experience after trying out London’s most expensive fish and chip restaurant

A foodie has revealed her verdict after trying out London’s most expensive fish and chip restaurant, admitting that she was disappointed by the experience.

Who doesn’t love a chippy dinner? Fish, mushy peas, battered sausage – and most importantly chips. As a distinctly British cuisine, high standards are expected with many of us very particular about what we expect from the meal.

If you live by the seaside, good fish and chips are 10 a penny but deep in the heart of London they can be a little hit and miss. Enter the Mayfair Chippy, an award-winning restaurant renowned for its fish and chips alongside an extensive menu featuring oysters, crab and mussels. It’s that good it’s also been awarded a 1AA Rosette by the Michelin Guide.

Such is its popularity it’s fully booked almost every day, seven days a week, with lengthy queues forming outside while waiting for one of its coveted spare walk-in tables. With prices starting at £23.95 for the Mayfair Classic, featuring fried cod or haddock, chips, mushy peas, tartar and chip shop curry sauce or HP gravy, it’s more than double the price of the average fish and chip meal in the UK (£10.92, according to Capital On Tap).

So is it worth the money? An intrepid diner volunteered to test it out but admitted it wasn’t the food that disappointed her. Rebecca Casserly, a food and travel content creator shared her review on social media explaining that she had booked the meal for her husband as a treat.

On arrival, Rebecca was shocked by the amount of people waiting outside and was grateful she had booked ahead to secure a spot in the fancy diner. Impressed by the decor and atmosphere the couple ordered drinks and jumped straight into the main course.

Showing off the impressive meal, which featured a huge battered sausage and a large piece of fish, Rebecca said that the food was cooked to perfection with the cod amazingly “flaky” and the batter “wonderfully crispy.” However, she confessed that it was hard to enjoy it as there was no air conditioning and the entire restaurant was swelteringly hot making it uncomfortable. She joked: “Imagine trying to eat your dinner on the surface of the sun”.

Rebecca also said everyone was asking for ice-cold water but there weren’t enough jugs to go around and the takeaway queue was so big that it encroached into the restaurant making her feel cramped. Responding to her review on Threads, one person wrote: “You should try in winter – I went last November and loved it.” And another user added: “Trouble is, even the best chip shop fish and chips just aren’t fine dining.”

The Mirror has contacted the Mayfair Chippy for comment.
