‘I tried Waitrose’s Halloween sandwich and I think more supermarkets should follow suit’

If Tesco’s birthday cake sandwich can go viral, maybe Waitrose’s Halloween sandwich should set a trend?

It’s Halloween and the supermarket ghouls are already haunting the shopping aisles, offering every “spooktacular” product from chocolates and cakes to party outfits and trick-or-treat collection bowls.

But Middle England’s premier delicatessen isn’t stopping there. Waitrose has stuck its head above the parapet this Halloween by launching its very own spooky sandwich, the first among Britain’s mainstream supermarkets.

Waitrose Spooktacular Chipotle Chicken Roll is on sale for £4.50 throughout October and besides the groan inducing use of the aforementioned word “spooktacular”, it’s actually a pretty awesome-looking sandwich.

I picked one up from my local supermarket and was curious about whether it would taste as good as it looks. The pumpkin-shaped bun is a fun and clever nod to the season and it’s dyed a lurid orange thanks to paprika extract.

The bun is dense and mercifully none too sweet. I can’t say it had a distinctive flavour, perhaps the paprika extract could have gone further in giving it a bit of a spicy kick. But the roast chicken breast is tasty, with tomato, spinach, red peppers and white cabbage all mixed in a mayonnaise sauce. In short, it’s a yummy chicken sandwich.

If Tesco can set a trend among the big chain supermarkets with its birthday cake sandwich, then surely Waitrose’s Halloween Chipotle Chicken Roll can set a similar ball rolling? Just think how these luridly dyed spooky sandwiches might cheer up Britain’s office class on their lunchbreaks.

There’s a reason folks love Halloween. It’s a time to get kooky and creative; and it clouds that dismal time at the end of summer and beginning of winter – when mental health falls off a cliff and we’re all in need of a pick-me-up. This is a fun, quirky way for workers to enjoy the Halloween spirit.

At £4.50, this is at the pricier end of Waitrose’s sandwich roster, but perhaps like Starbucks Spiced Pumpkin Latte, this can become a fun seasonal treat.
