Cleaning your home can be a time-consuming task, especially if you’re aiming to give every corner a thorough clean.

You might believe your dishwasher is solely for dishes and cutlery, but there are items around your house that can be cleaned in the machine, saving you effort and reducing cleaning time.

The fridge is one part of the house that needs to stay clean as it holds food. There’s some disagreement over how frequently it should be cleaned – Essential Food Hygiene suggests sanitising it weekly, while Martha Stewart and Which.com recommend a deep-clean every three months or so.

Rather than straining and twisting your arms to reach into the nooks of your fridge compartments, like those in the doors, you can actually remove them and put them in the dishwasher.

Cleaning guru Georgia, known to her over 166,000 TikTok followers as @cleanwithgeorgiia, explained this will save loads of time, reports the Express.

She also mentioned your glass microwave dish can be put in the machine too, saving you scrubbing time in your kitchen as “they really get smelly fast”.

Your toaster tray is another kitchen item that can be cleaned in the dishwasher, but remember to dry it thoroughly before putting it back into the toaster. Cleaning your stove can often be a daunting task that many of us delay for months, but knowing that these parts can also be cleaned in the dishwasher makes the job easier.

Georgia said: “I find these so fiddly to clean so chucking them in the dishwasher is the easiest way to do it. This is great for people who work 24/7 or their kids don’t let them do any cleaning, so put your dishwashers to good use.”

A toothbrush holder can quickly become grimy and we all know how challenging it can be to clean the inside when it’s coated in dried toothpaste and dirt. As this is essentially a glass, it can also be cleaned in the dishwasher, saving you the struggle of trying to scrub it clean by hand.

Lastly, Georgia revealed she also cleans her extractor fan hood vents in the dishwasher.

However, if you’re frequently using your dishwasher, it’s crucial to remember to clean it as well. According to appliance company Whirlpool, after each cycle, ensure to remove any remaining food particles or debris at the bottom.

Periodically, you should clean the machine’s filter and use white vinegar and baking soda, or a specific dishwasher cleaner, to keep it gleaming.
