Nobody wants to kick off their holiday feeling groggy from a long-haul flight, but one expert says that there are some very simple ways to tackle this

When you’re heading off somewhere far away on holiday, one thing that can really ruin your trip is jet lag. Sitting on a plane for hours and arriving in a different time zone can make you feel tired and groggy, which is not the best way to kick off the fun.

But according to one flight attendant, there are some very simple ways that you can eliminate jet lag on the way to your destination, allowing you to fully get the most out of your holiday.

Maddison Purdy, a cabin crew member, revealed to Cult Beauty her top tips for beating feelings of fatigue before you even land on holiday – and one of them involves wearing an accessory that you’ve probably packed in your hand luggage.

If your destination is ahead of your body’s time zone, Maddison says that wearing sunglasses upon arrival can be a clever hack to block out excessive daylight exposure.

Flight crews always suggest donning sunglasses during your journey from the airport to your accommodation to help your body adjust to the local time and ease into a more relaxed state without straining your eyes.

So if you aren’t already doing this, it could be worth packing your sunglasses in your carry-on bag so you can do this trick and beat any feelings of jet lag before you land, ensuring you’re ready to start your holiday with plenty of energy.

Another thing that holidaymakers can do to beat jet lag whilst on the plane is to make a simple change to the display settings on your phone.

One of the primary causes of jet lag is the disruption of your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. To counteract this, Maddison recommends changing the setting on your phone to automatically switch off blue light after a certain time. Blue light, similar to natural daylight, tricks your eyes into staying awake, hindering your ability to wind down to a restful sleep.

And surprisingly, brushing your teeth on the plane can work wonders – not only for your oral hygiene, but for your body clock too.

This is a very popular tip amongst cabin crew members, because the mint in the toothpaste can provide an invigorating sensation, giving you a quick burst of energy and temporarily fighting off fatigue.
