‘I’m a flight attendant and would never order one menu item – it makes you sick’

Travellers are vowing to ditch one common menu item while in the air after a flight attendant exposed a ‘dirty’ reality about working on board a plane. However, some have seen a perk to the warning

You might want to change your in-flight order next time you’re jetting off to Benidorm.

Plane food is notoriously bland and unappetising, meaning many Brits choose to fill up at the airport Spoons before embarking on their holibobs. Unless you’re happy with dry salad, rock-hard bread and microwaved meat, it’s probably best you don’t board on an empty stomach.

When it comes to drinks though it’s a different ball game. Even a Ryanair flight won’t let you down with an array of booze, hot beverages, and pop available (for a fee, of course). However, a flight attendant has warned one common habit when ordering our tipple onboard could make you sick – and there’s a pretty grim reason behind it.

Reddit users have unearthed an eight-year-old post, which has since been deleted, asking people to expose ‘dirty’ secrets about their industry. One user, who claims to be a flight attendant says she would never order a drink with ice.

“The ice is put in a tray with a scoop and the trays don’t get cleaned very often and the scoop sits in the ice,” she said. “So, every time I use it my hands touch the ice a bit. Every surface on the plane is touched by hundreds of people daily and not often disinfected.”

The user claims that staff don’t have the ‘opportunity’ to wash their hands at all during the food and drink service and will inevitably carry germs on their hands. “Between ice scoops, I’ll probably touch a seat, a Coke can, my tablet to charge someone for a drink, their credit card, a tray table, and the cart,” she added. “So basically, my hand snatches up all those lovely germs and then goes back into the ice drawer to pick the scoop back up and do it all again.”

Hundreds of grossed-out users rushed to the comments section to share their thoughts, with many vowing to switch up their in-flight orders. “Okay, never getting ice with my drinks anymore on the plane,” one person wrote.

Another commented: “I do this everywhere anyway. S***s already cold yo. I don’t need ice to dilute the flavour.” A third warned: “Don’t get ice anywhere,” while a fourth made light of the situation, joking: “Make sure to sterilize your ice with alcohol, I think you meant to say.”
