A gardening expert has shared his tried and tested method of getting rid of pesky moss after one woman tried expensive treatments to no avail – and it’ll cost you less than £20…

The weather is finally perking up, meaning it’s time to put your gloves on and get back into the garden.

We’ve had a miserable winter, not that you need reminding, full of relentless rain and wind that will have caused havoc on your garden. Moss loves to grow in these grim conditions and can often be a warning sign of poor drainage.

Unless you like the cottage-core appearance of moss, most people will want to get rid of the pesky stuff and think it tarnishes the look of their lawns. However, a gardening expert says there is one hack that will kill the weeds for good – leaving your garden lush and green once again.

Taking to the Gardening Hints and Tips Facebook page, one woman desperately asked for help to deal with her moss-ridden lawn after trying expensive treatments to no avail. “My husband purchased moss killer and it was supposed to work within hours. Well, it didn’t work and it’s been almost 24 hours,” she said.

“When he tried to rake the moss, there was more underneath. He’s worried about using other products out there because according to some reviews, they can stain the surrounding area. We need help with getting rid of all this moss; we’ve had issues with moss before but not to this extent.”

Luckily, professional gardner Chris Watson spotted the post and shared his tried and tested method. He urged the woman to purchase ‘lawn sand’ – which you can pick up from a slew of online retailers and gardening shops.

Amazon is currently selling a 10kg bag from Elixir Gardens for £16.99 – that is specifically designed for ‘moss control’. B&Q is also selling a 16kg bag of Westland Lawn Sand for £19, which has received a slew of five-star reviews.

“Used this for the first time and was very impressed with the results, you could see the difference in 48 hours,” one shopper wrote. Another agreed, commenting: “Moss started to die within the week and the grass grew strongly and a deep shade of green over the whole area applied too.” While a third says the product ‘does exactly what it is meant to’.

Watson recommends applying the product onto the affected area and waiting a ‘few weeks’ before raking it out. “The dead moss will turn black,” he added. “I’m a professional gardener and it works every time.”
