A royal author has listed three things he believes the monarchy needs to do in order to avoid more Prince Andrew humiliation in the future
The Royal Family can salvage its reputation from the scandals surrounding Prince Andrew, but only if they take three decisive steps, according to Royal author Andrew Lownie.
Lownie, who recently wrote the explosive book Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, has outlined his suggestions for the Firm following further allegations that surfaced from Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous memoir, Nobody’s Girl.
Andrew, 65, has since announced he will no longer use his Duke of York title as he believes “continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family”.
However, speaking on a new Channel 5 documentary titled 5 Days That Brought Down Prince Andrew, Lownie believes King Charles and Prince William need to take further action against Andrew. He stated: “If the monarchy gets a grip, if he leaves Royal Lodge, if he loses his titles, properly, including that of prince, and he goes into a form of exile, then I think the situation can be saved.”
Lownie also warned that it was a “very dangerous moment” for the crown, suggesting the pressure to completely exile Andrew is becoming “greater and greater”.
Meanwhile, Daisy McAndrew, another Royal commentator, believes the Andrew scandals, including his relationship with the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, have been “incredibly damaging” for the King.
She added: “Charles waited to be King longer than any other heir to the throne has ever done. He is in his mid 70s, he’s living with cancer, his reign has been overshadowed by his younger brother’s scandals.”
Daisy also revealed that formally removing Andrew’s Duke title would require parliamentary proceedings that could drag on for up to a year.
Meanwhile, professor Kate Williams, a historian and constitutional expert, told the Channel 5 documentary: “The last thing that the King wants is to go to parliament.
“It will be extremely humiliating and embarrassing for the Royal Family because, this is my opinion, all the MPs would vote it through.”
Andrew, who refutes the claims made against him, presently lives at Royal Lodge, a 30-room estate, where he and former wife Sarah Ferguson haven’t paid rent for 20 years.
Nevertheless, it’s been suggested that Andrew and Sarah, who have occupied the property since 2008, would insist on two properties in exchange for vacating Royal Lodge.
During departure negotiations with the Palace, Andrew is understood to have requested Harry and Meghan’s previous Windsor residence, Frogmore Cottage.
Reports have also emerged that Sarah would prefer to relocate to Adelaide Cottage, once William and Kate vacate next month for nearby Forest Lodge.
A pal of the pair told The Sun: “No one is really sure how it’s going to go down at the Palace yet. Frogmore Cottage is too small for both and Adelaide Cottage is around the corner so they will see each other whenever they want.
“Both have space for their daughters Eugenie and Beatrice and their families to visit.”
